Description: The bronze rider comes to help get Tavia's weyr ready for the baby.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 4, day 27 of Turn 6
She had been working at it slowly and resting when she tired out.
She'd requested a cradle but they wanted someone to come and pick it
up. In the meantime, she cleaned and moved things in her bedroom to
make room for the temporary addition of the baby.
Right at that moment though when she picked up the basket of small
clothes her back gave a twinge that nearly knocked the breath out of
her. It wasn't a contraction, she knew that because she'd had enough
of those practice ones lately to know the difference. She dropped the
basket and put a hand on the bed and the other around her belly then
leveraged herself over to sit down.
"Oh boy," she sighed. Sawauths' concern flowed to her and she warbled
from the outer weyr. **I'll be ok love, Kalamath's will be here
soon.** }:Kalamath is coming?:{ **Yes dear, soon** She smiled at the
flush of pleasure from her green. Truthfully he was a bit late, not
that it surprised her. He was a Wingleader after all. She was just so
glad he had promised to come and help her get ready.
She was sure she could have found some other help here at her own weyr
but that just wouldn't have been the same. She lay down on her back
with her knees peaked to try and take the pressure off the muscle
spasm. Glory arrived with a warble and a croon and settled next to her
head on the pillow singing comfort to her and sending pictures of her
bevy of admirers whom she'd left on the heights to pine for her. Tavia
chuckled and reached up to stroke tiny eye ridges where the golden
head lay on her shoulder.
U'kaiah was a little surprised no to see Tavia when he ducked his head
into her weyr. Where was she? "Tavia?" he called looking around for
evidence of where she might have gone.
"Back here," she called. She was a little embarrassed to have hurt
herself but she also knew that back injuries were nothing to sneeze
at.
The bronzerider followed the sound of her voice, stopping at the
entrance to her sleeping area. "Well, hello there. Taking a little
nap?"
"Not exactly," she smiled ruefully. She was quite sure he got better
looking every time she saw him. "I somehow tweaked my back, just
waiting for the muscle spasm to go away.
U'kaiah's brow furrowed a bit as he stepped into the room to hitch his
hip onto the bed beside her. His hand reached automatically for her
bulging stomach. "How did you manage to do that?
"Picked up the basket," she pointed over the side of the bed. The
spasm was beginning to subside and she relaxed into the bed. "I've
been moving things to get the place ready."
His hand gently rubbed the rounded shape as he said in a tone mixed with
accusation and tenderness, "What were you doing moving things? You knew
I would be coming..." Of course, he knew if there was any guilt to be
had, it was all on him for being a sharding arse and making her wait.
He had made her a promise, and though he had never intended to break it,
he had failed in some way. "Why don't you leave the heavy lifting to me
now. You just tell me what you want, and I'll do it. I'm your willing
personal drudge for the next couple days."
She put her hand on top of his and smiled. "I know, it was a bad
idea," she acknowledged. She kicked herself because as a nurse she
knew better. But the basket of clothes wasn't heavy at all and... she
was just frustrated. "I'll just have to accept my current limitations
I guess." She smiled up at him. "I'm very glad you're here." She
wiggled her eyebrows. "I'll be sure to use you shamefully."
That brought a true, warm smile to his face. He curled an arm around
the top of her head with a hum of approval. Bringing his face close to
hers he whispered, "I've been accused of being shameful a few times
myself. I find it quite appealing."
"One of your better qualities I'm sure," she chuckled. She threaded
her fingers through his hair and sighed. "So good to see you, " she
smiled. As much as she wanted to stay right where she was, they
needed to get down to the storage room and pick up the cradle. "but we
need to get going."
"We have plans?" he asked, eyebrows lifting slightly.
"It will only take a few minutes for you to get a couple of things
from the storage room and finish rearranging in here. Then we can
relax. Is that ok?"
"Of course that's fine. That's why I'm here, right?" he chuckled,
smoothing a hair back from her forehead. "I just got comfortable, is
all. Am I really that late?"
She smiled and shook her head. "No," she said. "I know your
responsibilities so I expect you when I see you." She was really quite
flattered that he'd arranged these few days to help her get ready.
"I'm comfortable with where you are too, but the cradle I want is in
demand by another mother and if I don't' pick it up today they're let
_her_ have it. So do you mind?"
He was slightly amused by the idea of two expectant mothers with large
bellies having a fight over a prized cradle. It seemed rather
ridiculous to him. One cradle ought to be much like another. But it
seemed important to her. "I don't mind at all. Do you want to wait
here for me, then?"
"Oh that sounds wonderful." She hadn't been looking forward to another
trip up and down the stairs again. She was so relieved it showed in
her voice. She squeezed his arm. "I'm so glad you're here."
U'kaiah could not doubt her sincerity. The way she touched and looked
at him spoke with more clarity than words ever could. She truly cared
for him, and he for her. But knowing just what a wonderful thing he had
found only reinforced all he stood to loose if he gave himself over to
it. And yet, D'ale was right. The ruination of their relationship
could be that very same fear. **Don't be stupid, U'kaiah. What will be
will be.** Leaning down, he kissed her softly, determined to enjoy this
time they had and letting the future take care of itself. "Just leave
it to me."
She returned his kiss and cupped the side of his face. Her hand
dropped to her belly and began stroking the life inside her, a gentle
smile on her lips. She felt pampered for once and it was a very nice
feeling. She closed her eyes and hummed while she waited for his
return.
