"Hello, Chupsin," Zelanka smiled. "Do you have a moment?" she asked.
He turned around to see the Headwoman, who he had known for most
of his life. "Of course."
"Do you have everything you need at the infirmary?" she inquired. "I
haven't seen a supply inventory from the infirmary so I thought to check
if you're well stocked."
"The farmcrafter gave me the herbs I needed not too long ago. The rest
I was preparing to give you. I can..finish it now if you like?" He only
needed to double check a few numbers.
"Sure, if you can. The sooner I get them, the sooner you'll get what you
need," Zelanka replied with a smile.
Chupsin nodded and turned, moving around his space with ease. He
knew where everything was. Labels and drawers and cabinets kept him
sane. He, like any good healer, was fastidious. He kept everything ordered
and disinfected. Scribbling, he nodded to himself. When he was done,
he turned again to her and handed over the list. "I believe that has it."
"Thank you. It's a pleasure to work with an effective crafter like you,"
Zelanka said, liking his methodic habits.
"If everything wasn't in order, an emergency might happen and I'd have to
stop and look for the redwort." He shook his head, thinking that
inexcusable.
"We wouldn't want that to happen. Oh, we should be receiving a fresh patch
of numbweed plant from the minor holders during the next sevenday, that
needs
to be boiled down to the salve. Are you going to supervise it?" she asked.
The women of the hold would be doing the majority of the work of boiling
numbweed, but there was usually a healer or two with them, to help and see
it got done
right.
That was a foul smelling chore and Chupsin knew it. Still, he would see it
done right. "I can if there is no other. Or I can send one of my senior
apprentices. They know enough and only need to go to the hall to get their
journeyman
knots." He would hate to leave the infirmary without a senior staff member.
"I'll let you know when we begin," Zelanka promised with a nod.
"What about the needlethorn? I thought we were going to try and plant some
of the bushes around the perimeter." It would be a deterrent to any would be
wall-scalers at least and give him a closer supply.
"That's still on the table. Some people feel it's too dangerous to plant so
close to the hold and playing children," Zelanka replied. "Although to my
experience,
children soon learn to avoid it when they have the needles pulled out of
their skin
for the first time."
"And I would be doing the pulling," he nodded.
"Yes, you would," the headwoman smiled with humor.
"Well I think it would be useful so I wish they would allow it. The more
supplies I don't have to get from far afield, the quicker I can replenish
stock and be
equipped to deal with whatever happens." He hated saying the same things
every single
time, but it was true.
"You have to take that up with the Steward," Zelanka said. What was planted
where was not under her supervision.
"I understand, but he's new." And therein was the other problem. Chupsin
didn't know what to think about Wirnan just yet.
"You still have to deal with him," Zelanka said.
"Right, but he asks you about a lot of things still doesn't he?" The
journeyman would if he were in Wirnan's position, feeling his way.
"How else would he learn?" Her question was almost rhetoric.
"So if you maybe planted the idea..." The healer knew she would figure it
out.
"We shall see what happens."
"Well thank you Headwoman. I know you probably have something else to do.
I'll get back to my duties." He looked around for his mortar.
"I always do, as must you too. See you later, Chupsin," Zelanka said.
