"Hello, I'lan, how are you doing?" Sh'dori greeted. The big brownrider sat down next to the young bronzerider, wine in his hand. He followed the way I'lans eyes were turned to. "And that's my girl you're oogling at," he said
good-naturedly.
"One of yours.... Sorry," apologised the young bronzerider hastily. She was a pretty girl though.
"Naah, I don't mind, oogle all you want. She's grown girl and can do what ever she pleases. Now to think of it, she's always done whatever she pleases. And she let's you know if she doesn't like you," the brownrider said, sounding rather proud. Of course, she was just one of his many
children and grand-children, but that didn't make him any less proud.
"Could you? Would you introduce me?" asked I'lan after a moment.
"Can't you do it yourself? She doesn't bite. Well, not too hard anyway," Sh'dori asked and laughed at his own joke.
"Maybe, but it never hurts to have a bit of help," admitted the younger man.
"After all, if she knew you approved..."
"She never needed my approval to anything," Sh'dori snorted, "but I introduce you two anyway." He got up heavily and pushed his empty glass to the nearby table.
The pair walked over in the direction of the lovely young woman that I'lan had been eyeing up. She turned to smile at them.
"What's up, old man?" she asked.
"And hello to you too, En. Someone here wants to meet you. May I introduce to you I'lan, dashing young bronzerider and wingmate of mine. I'lan, this is Endoriel, journeywoman weaver and one of my many children."
"Bronzerider, huh? Pleased to meet you," she said and offered her hand.
"N..nice to meet you too," replied I'lan with only the slightest hint of a stutter (probably caused by drinking!). He took her hand and gave it a brief shake.
Endoriel gave her father a curious look. "Playing match maker now?" she asked.
"Naah, he just wanted to meet you, he's been admiring you whole evening," Sh'dori answered.
"Really?" the woman looked I'lan with renewed interrest.
"Yes, really," replied the young man. "I just didn't want to upset your father."
She laughed. "Sh'dori doesn't get upset very easily. You would have to work out something really shocking."
The brownrider just grinned.
"Last time I saw him upset was when Sharixa's mother died. She was my half-sister and a greenrider."
"And you never wanted to stand yourself?" asked I'lan. Such a lovely looking woman would no doubt be an asset on a green, and then he would have no doubt that Naath would chase, none at all.
"I did stand, but then I got pregnant...", she shrugged. "And then I was too old. Not every weyrbrat impress, you know."
"Speaking of brat's, where are yours?" Sh'dori asked.
"Sleeping, I hope. Your mother's looking over them."
"But that is such a shame," replied the younger man, looking her in the eyes. "Think of what you missed out on."
"I don't feel I missed anything. There's more to the life than being a dragonrider," Endoriel answered rather sharply.
Sh'dori wispered to I'lan: "Don't start to argue with her about the issue. You'll never win. Change the subject."
Taking the hint, I'lan did so. "Would you like to dance?"
"Love to!" she flashed a smile to him. Turning to Sh'dori she said: "Find something else to do, I can manage myself."
"Right, I just look for Chamia and ask her to dance. Maybe later I can convince her out of that pretty dress of her..." he grinned naughtily.
Endoriel rolled her eyes and put her arm to the crook of I'lan's arm. "Just be careful and don't rip it, I spent long time sewing it."
I'lan led the journeywoman onto the dancefloor. There was something about her that he couldn't quite pin point, but he knew he'd like to get to know her better.
