Yanley knocked the door before entering the healer's office. "Good morning.
You're journeyman Chupsin, right?" she greeted. Chupsin had been just a boy
when she had married and moved to Lazur Lake Hold, so she really didn't know him like she knew the older people of the hold, like his parents.
"Ahhh mlady, Senior Journeyman at your service." He made it his business to
know the important people in the Hold. They were his ticket back to civilization.
"Pleased to meet you. Can we talk?" Yanley replied and asked.
"Certainly." He leaned back against the counter, ready to listen.
"Do you have enough staff in the infirmary? I'm volunteering to help out, I've done it before," Yanley plunged right into it. "Naturally I don't have any training in healercraft. I do know how to change bandages, sterilize instruments, give medication if I get the dosage from the Journeyman and keep company with the patients."
"I am actually in need of a proper apprentice, but a knowledgeable nurse
isn't always a bad thing either. Tell me, do you have any midwife experience?" That was usually the most valuable thing a woman in the south had to offer in a Hold.
"Some, not very much, but I've been in a few births and I've read about them even more," Yanley replied, her voice taking a sadder tone. Oh, how much she would love to have some first hand experience!
"I tell you what..we can try it on a trial basis and see how you work out. At the end of two sevendays if you've proven useful enough, I'll keep you on as a nurse. Is that agreeable, Lady?" Chupsin was curious and knew that he did need female help with those sorts of things.
"Yes, it is. Thank you, journeyman," Yanley replied. She wasn't surprised. She wouldn't trust a stranger with patients without testing them first either.
"How long do you plan to stay here then?" he asked curiously. Chupsin knew some about her situation, but not all.
"I'm here to stay permanently," Yanley said with a sad and bitter smile. She was certain he had already heard the rumours of her ugly divorce.
"Ah well then. Report here after breakfast tomorrow and we'll get to work." He looked her over. "You'll need to wear clothes that can be soiled."
"Of course, I'll see you tomorrow then," Yanley replied.
