Delivering the Manifest

Writers: Chelle, Anaria
Date Posted: 16th May 2011

Characters: Tiernan, Qorri
Description: Tiernan brings Qorri the manifest for the latest supplies delivered.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 16 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Meledei, Janani

After having lunch with Meledei, Tiernan headed up to the Weyr with
the inventory list of all the goods they had to deliver to the Weyr.
He had heard rumor on the way up that the new Senior Queen was going
to clutch any day, and he made a mental note to make sure the Weyr
didn't have any special needs for the upcoming Hatching. He had caught
a ride from a weyrling up to the Weyr-proper, and from there began the
task of trying to locate Headwoman Qorri.

One of the drudges in the Dining Cavern directed Tiernan to Qorri's
office, where he knocked on the door. "Headwoman?" he called out.

"Aye?" came her answer. She had been digging around in the flour all
morning, trying to ensure that it didn't have any bug infestations. The
little things were a menace, to be sure.

Tiernan entered, fighting back a laugh at the Headwoman's disheveled
state. He could tell what she'd been up to, as flour had a knack of
sticking to one's clothes. "Good afternoon, Headwoman. I'm Captain
Tiernan of the Seawing. I come bringing supplies from Emerald Falls.
Part of their tithe that spoils quickly, and needs to be dealt with quickly,"
he explained.

She put her hand out for his cargo manifest. Qorri would use it to verify
that everything had been delivered and to choose which staff members
would help her. "Good day, Captain."

"How goes everything?" Tiernan asked, handing over the manifest. He
knew that his crew was busy unloading the ship, and making sure the
cargo got safely to the Weyr's storerooms. "I heard rumor on the way
up that the new Weyrwoman's gold should be clutching any day now?"

"That's true. She's egg heavy and you can tell it. It's about time." Qorri
stood up and looked the list over. She went to find where she'd put the
hides that had her orders on it. The order had to be checked against the
manifest. Any outstanding items would have to be dealt with. "How are
the waters?"

"Pretty good now which, considering the storms that occur out here, is
quite fortunate. It seems like every time we're en route this way, a
hurricane hits," Tiernan said, shaking his head in disbelief. "I wanted to
check with you to see if there was anything special that you needed for
the Hatching? Any seasonal goods that you'd want on hand for the
celebrations?"

"The Weyrwoman will be making arrangements with the vintner hall as to
wine, but I'm sure it will have to be shipped in. You'll probably get the order
from the Hallmaster. We're good otherwise since she doesn't have any other
special requests." Qorri nodded to herself.

"That's certainly good to hear. I remember a Weyrwoman requesting
flowers be brought in from the other side of the continent to adorn
all the tables. Wine at least stays good for a few sevendays at sea!"
Tiernan exclaimed. Not quite wanting to head back to the ship, Tiernan
decided to start conversation. "How've you been recently? The menfolk
still chasing you about the Weyr?" he joked.

"Well it might be the other way around but...I still do well enough." One of
her eyebrows rose at the seacrafter's question. If it wasn't for his rank, Qorri
wouldn't bother much with conversation, but Tiernan ran a ship as she ran a
Weyr and it was a kindred feeling.

Tiernan laughed. "That's what matters! My crew keeps telling me that I
need to find a woman, but none of them seem willing to go get one for
me, no matter how much I do order them about." He shook his head with
mock disbelief. "I think part of it is that they want a woman aboard
to cook. Faranth knows our cook is a bit up in the turns, and
sometimes forgets how many times he's salted the stew!"

"Well it might do you good, though I know ship's life isn't for everyone."
It was a hard thing, to be surrounded by so many men and never having
a real home.

Tiernan nodded. "Aye, that's the truth." Deciding to change the
conversation to something a bit safer, he asked, "Have you been near
the Vintner Hall recently? They had a new ale there that has a bit of
a Klah flavor to it. It's pretty good, I can't wait till the next time
we can get out that way so I can have a bit more."

"I don't get out of the Weyr much anymore these days. I have to get myself
a good enough assistant trained up to run things if I ever do leave before I'll
have that luxury." She frowned, knowing it was hard to keep good girls from
getting themselves pregnant long enough to work them.

"That's a shame. You should find an excuse to get out more. I'll put
out the word that you're looking for a good assistant though, perhaps
I'll find someone who's interested. A nice Holdbred girl, perhaps,
who'd be slower to get into trouble. Perhaps a widow," Tiernan mused.

"An older woman would be good certainly." She started to think. "Be careful
about spreading the word, though. Can't be having any more holders thinking
we're trying to steal their women." Rolling her eyes, Qorri thought of the one
who had come to the Weyr.

"No, I actually have a few women in mind at my mother's Hold up north.
They're always wanting to come down South, enjoy a better climate,
that sort of deal. Many of her friends are widows, their husbands lost
at sea. So there's nothing keeping them there. They're used to a life
of hard work too. Good, sturdy women," Tiernan said.

"Of course it'd be different in the Weyr but...they'd have to know they couldn't
go outside of it. It's different there, Tiernan." The seaman didn't
have permanent
life on the continent so it was entirely possible that he might be
unaware of how
things worked.

Tiernan nodded, "I understand. I wouldn't send anyone who didn't
understand and take the offer seriously. Is there anything else that I
could get to help you out?" he asked, genuinely concerned. He'd
learned over the turns that it paid to keep the Headwomen and Stewards
that he dealt with on a regular basis happy.

"I'm still waiting on a big four poster bed like they have in the north,
but it's a pipe dream." She smiled, wistful. "Not even the Weyrwoman
has fancy stuff like that, so I wouldn't dare."

"Hmmm," Tiernan mused. "I do believe that would probably be a
challenge to get all the way down here, so I think I'll keep my
promises to kitchen staff and the like! Or perhaps a quick trip on the
ship one day if you were interested. We dock here pretty frequently,
so it wouldn't be that hard. We could even bring along a friend or two
if you'd like."

"If I ever have need of travel, I will ask. Otherwise, I will let you get back
to your duties. Will you stay here tonight?" She wondered if she needed to
ready quarters for him.

"No ma'am, I prefer sleeping on my ship, but thank you very much for
the offer," Tiernan said courteously. "It was nice seeing you again,
and I hope you have a lovely day."
