Meledei munched on her food, her expression thoughtful. She had seen
F'gol. It had been brief, and she didn't think he had seen her, but
the feelings that fleeting sighting had caused! It caused lonliness.
Anger. Hurt. Rejection. Sorrow. She still cared for him. That was
the worst part. She still cared for him. But she didn't think they
could ever return to the way they were before. Not after that. Not
after he...
The goldrider shook her head and stapped her stew with her spoon. Had
it been something she'd done? She'd asked that question a million
times. Had it been because she asked him to be her Weyrmate? Had it
been some other reason? Why? And why had he rejected her as a
weyrmate? Oh he had given reasons, but lately Meledei had been
focusing on that for some reason. It was the beginning of the end, it
seemed, for everything between them. She looked up at the young man
across from her, a young man who had at least stayed beside her as a
friend and without thinking, she asked, "If I asked you to be my
weyrmate, would you?"
Z'ku stared at her. "Um ... what?"
"Okay, let me rephrase that." Meledei tapped her spoon against the side of
her bowl. "Why would you have refused to weyrmate with me?" She asked, her
frown deepening. "I mean...what's wrong with me?"
"Nothing," Z'ku answered easily. "Well, okay. Maybe one thing: you're too
nice."
Now it was Meledei's turn to stare. "What do you mean, 'I'm too nice.'?"
"I meant it as a joke. You're the nicest person I know." Once he'd
thought to use her on his way up the ranks, but that wasn't possible
now. Not after having her has a friend.
"Oh." Meledei managed a smile. "Thanks. You're sweet Z'ku. But...I
don't know. I guess I'm being a bit...self absorbed. Been trying to
figure out what my problem has been." And she'd been moody. It
wasn't Elleth. The gold dragon showed no sign of rising, not any time
soon that she could tell. No glow, no moodiness on _Elleth's_ part,
just her own. She sighed and pushed away her food. "I'm not really
hungry. You want the rest of that?"
"Is that what happened with you and F'gol? You asked him to be your
weyrmate and he said no?" He wanted to go find the bluerider and beat
some sense into him. Or maybe just beat him.
"Well. No. At least, I didn't think so at the time." Meledei stared
at her brow, creases created in her brow as she thought. "But looking
back...I guess that was the beginning of the end."
"Maybe he didn't really love you." It was out of his mouth before he
could stop himself.
That stung. But hadn't Meledei been thinking that for a long time?
It was just different when someone said it out loud. It rang like a
hammer against a bell. "Yeah." She agreed, pushing herself to her
feet. "I think you're right. Look, I'd better go. See you later?"
"Wait, Meledei. I shouldn't have said that."
Meledei shook her head. "No, you should have. It's something that
I've been unwilling to say myself for a very long time. It's about
time someone said it for me." She sighs and runs a hand over her
hair. "I'll see you later." She didn't give him time to respond
further, but turned and quickly made her way out, thoughts dark.
