Defending Others Leads to Trouble

Location: Dragonsfall Weyr

Kenza knocked, though she didn't wait for an answer before she
entered his office.

"So, we're doing the annual evaluations again, are we U'kaiah?
Whatever will you say about your rather willful wingthird? Hmm?"
Kenza asked as she moved into the room and took the chair in
front of his desk.

"Well, I was going to say she's rather willful, but I guess that
surprise is ruined," he grinned, setting down his pen.

"Sounds like that was an rather boring evaluation then," Kenza replied.
"Solith will be disappointed to know we are so boring." She grinned
wickedly at him. "Working on something interesting?" She asked, pointing
towards the papers he had sitting on his desk.

"Is hidework _ever_ interesting?" he asked with a roll of his eyes.
"Just making up the next sevenday's schedule."

"So true, U'kaiah." Kenza snorted. Her posture changed a bit in the next
moment as she plopped both feet firmly on the ground and leaned forward
onto her knees.

"Before we start this evaluation, there is something I need to discuss
with you." She looked her wingleader right in the eye. "J'nev."

Well, that certainly wasn't surprising, he thought with a long sigh.
"What, is he causing you trouble now, too?"

"Actually, he came to see me to discuss his most recent assignments. He
seems rather bothered by the tasks he's been given." Kenza held up a
hand to forestall U'kaiah as she continued. "Look, like I told him, I
don't give a damn who you bronze riders want to roll on the furs with,
but if you _are_ punishing him just because he won a flight fair and
square, then I
think it's time to rethink your strategy. You've always attracted the
best riders to your wing and if word gets around that your handing out
shifts
based on your personal attitutdes, people are going to turn. I'm just
saying, and all, to think about it." Kenza shrugged her shoulders and
sat back
in the chair.

U'kaiah's eyes narrowed slightly. "You never come to have me just
'think' about something. You always tell me plainly what you think and
what you want. So just what is on your mind, Kenza?"

She snorted. "Fine. You asked for it. You're a damn fool if you think
that punishing the annoying bronze rider isn't going to come back to
hurt _you_ in the long run. Not just that, but U'kaiah you can't go
punishing
people just because they won a flight. Give me a break. Are you going to
run everyone off your wing just so you can sleep with who _you_ want to
sleep with. Give him a shift or two of sharding sweeprides if it makes
you feel good, but then get him the hell back onto regular rotations. I
looked at the schedule. No one should have that run day after day the
way J'nev
has, unless they've _really_ screwed something up in the wing. Don't
bring
your personal stuff into the fighting wing. If you do, then hell," Kenza
stopped her diatribe and slapped her thighs in agitation, "you are _not_
the rider and wingleader you once were. The one I've always respected.
You
are going to lose that respect if you bring your personal life into your
wing."

"Well, it sure didn't take much to shake your faith in me, did it,
Kenza. Do you really think I give a tunnel snake's hind end who won
Aileyan's Flight? I wouldn't care if she slept with half the Weyr! I'm
not holdbred, as you're well aware," he spat out, hurt more than angry
that she would think he would punish a man for something so
inconsequential. "I'm not punishing him for the Flight. I'm punishing
him for _after_ the Flight, when the little jerk displayed some of the
worst Flight Room behavior I've ever heard of! He resorted to insulting
her with all sorts of hateful words because he was angry when she
refused to go another round with him. It's inexcusable, Kenza and I
won't just over look that kind of behavior from him, no matter if it's
her Flight, your Flight, or any other greenrider's Flight!"

"He what?" She asked rather loudly. Gritting her teeth and narrowing her
eyes, she muttered, "I told him that if I went to battle for him and he
hadn't told me the whole truth that I would see to it that he had even
worse assignments to deal with than what he has now." Her nostrils
flared as
she thought of what she would do to that sniveling little bronzerider
for
putting her in this place. She'd fought for him because she'd felt that
U'kaiah was showing favoritism towards Aileyan in ways that she hadn't
anticipated, but now, it turns out she'd been made the fool. "I'll see
he pays for not telling me the whole truth," she gritted out.

"You'll do no such thing," U'kaiah said sternly. "She didn't want me to
talk to him about this because she was afraid he would lash out against
her, and though I would never let that happen to her, I also won't
betray her trust. If she hadn't told me in confidence, you better
believe I would have made an example of him for _all_ to see. But as it
is, you're just going to have to sit on your hands and accept the fact
that J'nev made you the fool, and you should think on that before
rushing to judgments and 'going to battle' against me. After knowing me
all my life, you should know me better by now, Kenza. You should be on
_my_ side." And yet somehow she always seemed to be on everyone elses.
J'nev, N'vanik... "What do you have against Aileyan and I that makes
you so sharding quick to believe the worst in me?"

"I have nothing against you or Aileyan, U'kaiah." Kenza paused,
feeling her fingers curl at the thought of J'nev. He _would_ pay for
this. He might not realize it now, but he'd made a far worse enemy
than he could ever have had in U'kaiah or Aileyan. Kenza was
rip-roaring angry. She would restrain herself now, for she'd already
overstepped her bounds and nearly ruined the relationship she shared
with her wingleader, but she _would_ find a way to make the arrogant,
conceited, lying, no-good, young bronzerider pay for his lies to her.

"I _am_ sorry, U'kaiah. There is nothing more I can say to amend this
now. I will keep an eye on J'nev and if he so much as steps out of
line, I assure you I will deal with him for you." That was the least
she could do to show her support to U'kaiah once more. Kenza knew she
stood on tenuous ground with him at the moment. She'd crossed the line
a bit too far and only time would tell whether their friendship from
years past would withstand this current debacle.
