Qorri had seen the dragons and saw Traelyn leave. She knew something
was wrong, but as a nonrider she didn't have the same ways of finding
out that others did. So the Headwoman did what she usually did. She
went straight to the source of all things. "Weyrleader, are you in there?"
"Yeah." He looked up from the hidework he was trying to focus on.
Qorri. Of course the Headwoman would want to know what was going on.
"Hi Qorri."
"So.." She just looked at him, expecting an answer. They had been working
with each other long enough that she didn't feel she had to do more.
There was probably a better way to say it, but he didn't have the
energy to think of one. "Trae tried to kill herself."
Her eyes widened slightly, but she had the temerity to keep control of herself.
"But she's okay?" Qorri really didn't know what else to say to that.
"She's alive. The mindhealers took her away to a Hall. They'll take
care of her." He tried not to think about it, even as he said it. He
was just stating facts, that was all.
"So, besides you, who's in charge?" That was vital knowledge for Qorri. She
had to go through the Weyrwoman for tithes, assignments for the Weyr's
children, and even to make arrangements for the crafters.
"Shards." N'vanik rubbed his face. "We need a new Weyrwoman." **She's
not coming back.**
"Generally, those are chosen by the dragons, but since that might be a wait.....
You have Jyramikah or Meledei eh?" Meledei was too young, so Qorri automatically
discounted that possibility.
"Meledei is too young, and Jyramikah stepped down as 'Second. I hardly
think she'd want to be Weyrwoman." N'vanik sighed. "So that leaves
Janani, and she just got here."
"Very true. She hasn't been given traditional duties here really yet." Qorri
frowned, realizing that without any older goldriders there, it would likely be
her job to teach the woman what Dolphin Cove needed from her. "Is she
teachable?" She sighed, not having had much experience with the woman.
That got a snort out of N'vanik. "She's not a dimglow."
"Okay..so she has a brain. Will she listen?" That was another thing with the
queenriders. Meledei was young, but this one wasn't.
N'vanik shrugged. "You never know what they might do once they get the
power. But as she is now, I think she'll listen."
"Allright, then we'll give her a shot. If she doesn't work, you better
have a plan
B." Qorri would not see her Weyr ruined, not after so much work. "You haven't
told her yet."
"No, I guess that's next on my list. And plan B is letting the dragons
decide. I can only make her temporary Weyrwoman." Shards, would he win
the next Flight? He didn't even want to think about that now.
"Allright well..let me know what she says. She might say no, after all."
Qorri didn't know what that might mean.
Wouldn't _that_ be great. "I hope not. She's our best choice." If she
said no, they might have to look outside the Weyr. The thought of
having to interview a stream of ambitious goldriders was enough to
give him a headache. **Replacing her. I'm replacing Traelyn.** The
reality of it hit him again.
Qorri knew this was a huge problem for him and the rest of the Weyr.
"You worry about the dragons. I'll keep the rest of the place running.
Tell me what she says and I'll teach her up."
"Alright. Thanks Qorri." N'vanik turned back to the piece of hide. He
wrote 'Janani' and underlined her name.
