The hum seemed to almost fill her being. At first, Cardella wasn't sure what it was she was feeling, until someone shouted out that the hatching was beginning. With wide eyes, she ran to her space in the barracks and quickly grabbed the white robe she'd been issued. She tried to steady her racing heart and shaking hands, but it was no use. She was nervous and excited all at the same time.
As quick as she could she joined the others waiting for their chance to go in to the sands. She smiled at Galwen and Kendale and some of the others. When they finally marched onto the sands she thought she just might faint from sheer nerves. _Everyone_, yes _everyone_ was watching.
The eggs were rocking and twitching, and they immediately drew her attention. She was utterly fixated on them. They were breathtaking, awe-inspiring, and even a bit frightening to look upon. Would she find a lifemate in this set of oblong eggs? Was this what she was truly destined for here at the Weyr?
The cracking sound of the egg seemed to rend the air in two. Her eyes opened wider as she watched the first hatchling a brown, emerge. He looked so…gangly and small compared to the large, magnificent beasts she had grown accustomed to. Her hands clasped together in glee when she saw him join with Kendale…no K'ale now. Tears of happiness for her friend sprang to her eyes.
She wanted to congratulate him then and there, but her attention was drawn to more of the eggs as they began to split and little dragonets hatched forth, crying piteously for help and a mate. Her heart soared when Galwen…G'ale joined with the first green that came forth. She couldn't hide her tears of happiness for her two closest friends.
Before she could react, more eggs hatched and cheers rose. Dragons found riders and riders their partners for life. Yet, still she stood alone on the sands. Her joy for her friends was overwhelming, but she now found a new emotion taking hold. Uncertainty. Watching so many others pair off, left her wondering why she had not been chosen. **I am not destined for this, it seems,** she started to tell herself as she watched the number of eggs start to dwindle further and further.
She would _not_ cry. She would be strong. Let her friends know that she was happy for them and return to her duties in the kitchens. Her hands clenched tightly in front of herself, Cardella tried to tell herself everything would be okay. She didn't _need_ a dragon to be happy. Hadn't she been happy before? So what if she'd worked diligently to learn all she could…to be the best Candidate…none of that seemed to matter now. The dragons chose, and they had not chosen _her_.
She swallowed a lump in her throat as she realized all her hard work might not pay off. Would she be laughed at by the others? Would they look down upon her now? Her eyes darted upward as the sound of another egg cracking filled the air. Yet, the little dragon did not come to her.
She put on a false smile, though tears stung the back of her throat. She glanced around, only a few others remained standing with her, and so few eggs left. Four…now only three. Cardella didn't know how she would survive this, but she _would_. If nothing else, she had learned she had a strength deep within her over these months that she hadn't known before.
She almost didn't look up when the sound of the shell cracking signified the next hatchling coming forth. Yet, she did, and her eyes met those sparkling eyes of a rather quizzical green dragon. The little creature stumbled in her direction. Cardella's eyes widened once more. The dragonet stopped, as though confused, titled its head to the side, watching her, before stumbling forward once again.
}:_I_ want you. You are mine.:{ The voice rang as clear as a bell into her mind. She gasped and all but fell to her knees before the green dragon whose hide, still a bit dull from hatching, glimmered in the light. }: I am Awenth. I am hungry.:{
Cardella _did_ cry then, but the tears were those of pure joy. The love she felt emanating from the dragon before her was literally breathtaking. She had felt happiness before, but this, this was something more.
"I love you, Awenth," she whispered, stroking the eye socket of the green, before rising, sand clinging to her garments. Cardella did not care. She only had eyes for Awenth. They were joined. Together. Two hearts unbreakable by time itself. Now she would learn the true strength she carried within her, with Awenth by her side to support and guide her. She would never be alone again.
