Description: Kendale's about to kick butt!
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 12, day 5 of Turn 5

Catrien stormed into the dinning Hall. If this tall fella behind her
was going to actually, for once, live up to his word, then she was
more than happy to lead the way. If he wasn't...well, she was so fed
up with the likes of Berren and Nadden that she fancied her own
chances against the Holder louts. Flicking her annoying mop of hair
out of her eyes, she scanned the room, looking for at least one of
those smug bastards.
Still trailing in her wake, Garrent came into the room. Seeing the
familiar faces of his friends, he all but ran to where Galwen and
Cardella were sitting. Catrien and that Kendale might be
brave but he was anything but, and glad for it. Sliding onto the
bench with the two small Candidates, he said, "I think Cat's really
done it now."
Cardella looked up quickly with surprise on her face. "What's going
on?" She asked Garrent, "What's Cat done now?" She looked around the
room, spotting the fiery lass across the hall. She looked about ready
to tear someone apart. She quickly looked back at Garrent and Galwen,
wondering whatever was going on.
Galwen looked back at her, just as suprised. Turning back to Garrent,
he asked, "so what gives?"
"That tall guy there." Garrent pointed to Kendale who was with
Catrien. "He saved me from Berren and some of his cronies. And then
Cat tore into him about why he and the big Weyr boys don't protect us
from the Holder bullies and..."
"There!" Catrien shouted, and pointed, silencing the entire hall.
"There he is!" She turned to Kendale, still pointing at Berren.
Cardella had turned to look at who Garrent pointed out. Kendale.
They'd become friends. He was very nice. Berren. Cardella shuddered at
that name. He was pure evil in her mind. She still recalled that
afternoon outside the Weyr and what that brute had nearly tried to do.
She was quickly distracted from her thoughts when Catrien shouted out.
Berren, who'd been casually leaning against the wall cleaning the dirt
from beneath his fingernails and watching the new arrivals through
lidded eyes, looked up and sneered when Catrien shouted and pointed to
him.
"I'm here," he sneered at her and Kendale. "What's it to you." The
small pocketknife he'd been using to clean his nails still in his
hand, he pushed off casually from the wall. "You looking for a little
action," he breathed to Catrien as he approached. "I don't _do_ that."
He added, inclining his head towards Kendale with a look of disgust on
his face.
Kendale spread his legs slightly balancing on the balls of his feet
arms crossed across his chest as he looked at the other kid. "Really?
That's all you've got?" he shook his head "That might work on the
little ones but not on me." he pushed Catrien aside and stepped
closer. From what his da said this kind was usually half interested
in the boys they tormented and would probably end up on a blue... if
he was lucky. He hadn't missed the knife and was prepared.
Now anyone who knew Kendale in the least would know he was as straight
as an arrow but this kid didn't know that, and he was smaller than
Kendale so might feel a bit of the fear he'd inflicted on the smaller
boys in the right circumstances. "Shame though," he sneered. "You have
such a pretty mouth."
Catrien felt like shouting at Kendale when he pushed her aside, but
clamped her mouth shut when he said those words. Her mood changing
quicker than a proddy green flit's, she covered her mouth to keep from
laughing out loud at what he said.
"You...you," Berren growled, his eyes flashing that this _boy_ would
even suggest such a thing! Slipping the knife into his pocket for the
time being, he balled his fists at his side. When the silly chit of a
girl started giggling, he turned his nasty gaze to her, and would have
taken a step in her direction if Kendale didn't stand in his way.
Reaching out, he shoved Kendale on the shoulders. "I'd never fancy the
likes of a pansy like you!"
"Pansy? You really think so?" said Kendale unmoving like a rock when
Berren tried to shove him. A smiths muscles rippled unseen beneath his
shirt. "You know what they say, takes one to know one. So don't touch
me unless you mean it pretty boy." his smile was grim. "Or are you
performing for your friends and secretly you'd love to get to know me
better?" he whispered in the other boy's face. "Maybe you'll Impress
green... then I'll have you someday."
_That_ did it! Berren's fist was clenched so tight he nearly stuck his
own fingernails through his flesh. Barring his teeth, he swung and
felt satisfactions the instant his fist connected with Kendale's jaw.
"You'll regret that," he growled, his eyes flashing angrily as his
face contorted with a rage inside. He was not like _them_! Berren
pulled back his fist ready to strike again.
Cardella, who'd been watching from her table, darted to her feet with
a gasp. "Oh no!" She cried, wide-eyed as she pointed towards Kendale
and Berren. The whole room was watching the pair and the buzz in the
room was quickly growing. Kendale was her friend and she despised
Berren as much as the rest of them after what he'd tried to do to her.
Kendale got just what he was after when Berren threw the first punch in
public where dozens of people could see it. Of course, taking the hit
hurt but he was expecting it and turned his head to deflect most of
the force. Berren's fist slid along his jaw. His hand came up and
grabbed the fist as it came past the end of his jaw. He whipped his
head back around and pulled Berren into him, then twisted the arm down
and behind the other kids back turning him as he forced him face first
into the wall he'd been leaning against.
Galwen had jumped up when Cardella had but all but fell down in
laughter when Berren was trusted up like a wherry by Kendale. Garrent
looked torn between being glad and being mortified. Galwen was
laughing so hard he fell against Cardella. "Opps! Sorry!" He hopped
back up to see more.
Kendale leaned hard against Berren's back holding him in place. "So maybe
you should think twice before you threaten or touch any of those young
people again Berren" he said softly only for the other boy's ears. "I
won't like it and I'll come and find you. The Weyr needs them just
like it needs you." he didn't particularly think that the Weyr needed
someone like Berren and his buddies but it wasn't his place to choose.
"Know this," he spat "I know you have friends, but so do I. There is
always someone bigger and badder than you around the corner. Next time
won't be so pleasant." he lifted the pressure and stepped back
releasing the bully. "Anything happens to any of them for any
reason... and I will find _you_" he said louder so he could be heard
by those nearby.
Berren was seething inside, but the pressure on his arm was nearly unbearable. Berren wanted to slug the kid, but then he tweaked his arm just a bit more and he was gasping in pain. His eyes watering and opening, he realized he couldn't intimidate Kendale the way he had the other pathetic candidates.
When Kendale released him, Berren sneered, gripping his arm in pain. "I'll make sure you pay for this, weyrbrat. You just wait and see." Berren turned and jerked his head at his friends and they quickly scattered. He would report the abuse to the higher ups. Berren might have used words, but he hadn't yet _attacked_ someone. No, he'd see the Kendale paid for this insult. "Watch your back, smith. You can't have eyes everywhere and you know it," Berren snarled and then hurried off with his friends. Revenge the only thought on his mind.
Catrien watched the coward stumble off with his friends. "Yeah, what a pansy, going of with your little girlfriends! Wonder just how they'll comfort him, eh?" She said to Kendale but loud enough so the retreating bully could hear her. Like he was going to be able to do anything to the son of the wingthird!
Kendale wasn't worried, well not _much_. Berren for all his bluster had thrown the first punch in front of at least 20 witnesses and all he'd done was push him against a wall. Hopefully that would be enough to allow him to Stand when the time came. He rolled his eyes at Catrien and her big mouth.
