"Hey, Qorri. How's your day?"
Qorri was out of the Lower Caverns for once, taking a bit of time to
herself. Sitting in the sun with her legs crossed, she was obviously
trying her best to relax. Without a weyr, she didn't have a ledge to sun
herself like a dragon would. Her quarters were inside the Weyr, without
a window and every now and again she craved the sun. "Going well
enough Weyrleader. And yours?" She had a sandwich in one hand.
"Good. Mind if I join you for a few minutes? If people see us
together, they might think we're busy and leave us alone." He smiled a
little.
"Ah hiding out..I see. Aye you can sit if you have a mind." Pulling up
her waterskin, she took a swig.
"Thanks." He settled down with a glass of juice and looked out over the beach.
"So what's going on right now in riderland?" Unlike most of the Weyr's
denizens, Qorri had no family at Dolphin Cove so she had no reason to
be particularly interested in what happened outside her own little sphere
most days.
"The usual. Drills, Thread, a few individuals trying to make my life
hard." Some days it got on his nerves, and other days he was able to
shrug it off.
"There will always be those that have to butt their heads up against you,
just to see if you'll move." Her tone was philosophical, speaking from her
own experience.
He chuckled. "That used to be my job."
"Then you would know why they're doing it and therefore could probably
nip it in the bud better than anyone else eh?" Qorri chuckled softly as she
ate bits of her sandwich.
He nodded and took another sip. "What about you? Were you ever a
troublemaker?"
"No..I was a good girl. Married like I was supposed to then followed my
husband around the continent. And then he up and died on me." She wasn't
bitter about it, since she had never really loved him, but she did realize how
lucky she'd been to end up at Dolphin Cove.
"Sorry to hear that."
"Eh it's okay. I just wish I might have had children." She shrugged and sipped
some of her drink.
"You still could," he said. She was barely older than he was.
"I only have a few more turns. Really though, it's my place to be a
fostermother now." With her duties, it was easier to deal with older
children than with younger ones that needed attention.
"People say foster children can be as much your own as those by blood."
"I terrorize them enough. Hopefully they'll be fine Weyrfolk when they get
too old. If not, I'll terrorize them somemore." She finished off her drink and
glanced at some people walking by. "You ever had kids?" She knew riders usually
did, whether they knew it or not.
"One." He felt a pang, remembering it could have been two. "She's a
greenrider. Impressed from Loseth's first clutch."
"Oh..well that's good. Is she still here?" Qorri was very curious, intending to
meet the girl perhaps just to see what she was like.
"Yeah, she's here. I haven't driven her away yet," he said with a little smile.
"MMmmm that's nice." Qorri worked on her beverage, refilling it. "So I hear
there was an upset at Dragonsfall."
"A new Queen, and now a new Weyrleader." He wondered how the Weyr
would adjust. Maybe they would be lucky and things would go smoothly.
"Have there ever really been bad Weyrleaders?" Qorri hadn't been Weyrbred
so she didn't know much about histories.
"Yeah, there have. And some that made really bad mistakes." He didn't
know if O'dan had been a bad Weyrleader outside of his mistake. The
disaster overshadowed the rest of his legacy. "We're still recovering
from one of those mistakes."
"Oh..Tell me?" Qorri was genuinely curious. One day when she had time
she might visit the harpers and get a crash course in Weyr history.
"O'dan, a few Weyrleaders before me, made a mistake during Fall. He
brought his Wing out in the wrong place, and dozens of dragonpairs
were hurt or killed. We're just now getting up to the numbers we had
before that." He remembered asking to help out at Dolphin Cove, and
being denied. Now he was helping, just in a way he never expected.
"Ohhh what a shame." She thought about what that really meant and
shook herself. She admired the dragons and couldn't imagine what such
a thing would mean.
"It's tough to inherit the results of someone else's mistake." N'vanik
thought about it for a moment. "I suppose we all do, in some way."
"Aye...there were a lot of changes I had to make. You better believe there
were people that weren't so happy about it." She frowned. Qorri wasn't
Weyrbred and a lot of people had seen that as a snub.
"Can't please everybody," he said with a hint of humor.
"Nope. First lesson of leadership right there." She smiled, thinking he was
easy to talk to.
"Good thing I already knew that when I started."
"Do you know what the second lesson is?" she asked teasingly.
He looked at her with a raised eyebrow. "Is there a list somewhere I
don't know about?"
"Delegation is key or as I like to say, you can't do EVERYTHING." Qorri
grinned. That was something she had to work hard on at times. It was too
tempting to do it herself. "Course three is important too. When something
can go wrong, it usually will."
N'vanik laughed. "So there _is_ a list!"
"I'm pretty sure that's all there is. Just the three things." Qorri had finished
the sandwich but she was sure there was liquid left in the skin. Pulling it up,
she took a pull from it.
"I suppose I've avoided my work long enough." He stood and brushed off
a bit of sand. "Good day, Qorri."
"Good day, Weyrleader. Don't run 'em too hard." She grinned and looked up
at the sun, judging the time. She'd have to go see about the evening meal soon.
