Finally Flying Again

Characters: B'vin, I'lan
Description: B'vin flies Serenth for the first time since his injury.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 9, day 7 of Turn 3

B'vin walked out into the bowl; he was stiff, but he was _walking_! He thought it was ridiculous that he had to come down here just to get on Serenth for a short ride, but the healers had insisted that he go slow and that he had someone with him in case something went wrong. Instead of facing the wrath of the healers by arguing and have them possibly ground him longer, he gave in.

He wasn't expecting to see I'lan standing next to Serenth with his bronze. As B'vin got closer, he asked disdainfully, "You're my babysitter?"

"Looks like it," replied I'lan. He wasn't exactly thrilled by the idea either. But the theory was that having someone who'd drilled and trained with B'vin was supposed to help.

B'vin just grunted. He didn't like the bronzerider, I'lan was probably doing this just to watch him in a vulnerable position. "Let's get this over with then."

"Just remember that Naath is more than big enough to catch the pair of you," said I'lan. He did feel sorry for B'vin, nobody deserved the scorings that had come out of that accident. So B'vin had bullied poor M'tias before they impressed. But that was in the past now.

**He just _loves_ rubbing it in that we need help.** B'vin thought grimly as he walked past I'lan to Serenth.

}: Naath is a nice dragon, he says we will fly well. :{ Serenth crouched down in anticipation so B'vin could climb up and mount her. It was an awkward climb but B'vin managed it and strapped himself in, ready to finally be in the air again where he belonged!

"Do you need help?" asked I'lan as he watched B'vin.

"No," B'vin said annoyed, "I've got it."

}:Serenth?:{ questioned Naath. }:Are you ready to fly again?:{ }: Ready! :{ came Serenth's excited reply as she flapped her wings.

Naath waited for his rider to settle himself, and clip the straps fastened, before gently taking to the air.

}:Now you,:{ he said gently to the green.

}: Here we go! :{ Serenth said excitedly to B'vin as she gave a mighty push with her legs and started beating her wings to gain altitude until she matched height with Naath.

B'vin had been ready, but the weakness in his leg had left him unable to grip as tight as he was used to. He had been thrown back and to the side some and was silently thanking the riding straps that had helped to hold him in. He readjusted himself quickly and made no mention of his inital problem.

}:Take it steady,:{ Naath told the green. }:Your rider needs to get used to this again.:{ }: He is happy to be in the air with me! :{ Serenth replied happily.

}:I bet he is,:{ replied Naath. }:Tell me, are you or he tired yet?:{ There was no reply for a few moments, and then Serenth answered in a more subdued tone, }: We are not tired but my rider hurts. He says he wants to fly more. :{ }:He should come down.:{ }: He says soon. :{ Serenth said sweetly. She really did like flying with her rider, it had been so long!

}:I know, but the healers told mine not to have him over exert himself,:{ replied Naath. In fact the healers had been quite strong on that point, at any sign of stress for either half of the pair, he was to get them down.

Serenth didn't argue, and while B'vin did, he was quiet by the time they landed. He knew when he was beat and he didn't want to be grounded again. He gave Serenth a loving pat before undoing his straps and attempted to dismount. It wasn't graceful, and when he jumped down the impact shock on his bad leg made him fall to his good knee; but he was standing upright again a few seconds later.

"B'vin? You okay?" asked I'lan as he got down from Naath. Watching the greenrider had made him summon the waiting healer over.

"I'm fine," he answered annoyed his fall had been seen, "I just need to be a bit more careful." To prove it, he took a few steps; they were stiff steps but he didn't limp.

"Lets get you checked over lad," said the healer, "Just to be on the safe side, eh?"

"Fine" he said defeated, ** Serenth go ahead and go up to the weyr, I'll be there in a few minutes. **

The healer worked quickly, soon giving B'vin the okay.

As he left, I'lan called out to the young greenrider. "You did okay."

B'vin tried to detect some sarcasm out of the statement but couldn't find any. "Thanks." he replied grudgingly as he walked stiffly away towards his weyr.
