Tavia was terribly late. When she got back to her weyr there wasn't time to
bathe and just sponged off quickly while she changed from her flying
leathers into clothing more fitting the infirmary. Sawauth flew off to the
heights to find a handsome brown to sun with while Tavia hustled down to the
infirmary.
Skidding to a stop right outside the door she strolled in for all the world
like she was exactly on time.
"Tavia." Vandor's voice boomed with no effort. It just carried and
reverberated, the big man's barrel chest helping the echo along. It
was the sort of voice that tickled the throat of those who heard it.
He offered a smile to the young woman who so calmly and confidently
entered. "You seem to have lost track of the time."
"Oh yes, sorry about that Vandor," she said "I got hung up at
Dragonsfall when I took Ranari's boy over there to see his da." she
was making a little stretch of the truth that he hopefully wouldn't
examine too closely.
"I see." Vandor arched an eyebrow at the greenrider. No, he wasn't
going to let this go. "And how, exactly, did you get hung up?"
She didn't exactly roll her eyes but she desperately wanted to. She
wasn't a child for Faranth's sake; and he wasn't her da. "I ran into
an old friend I hadn't seen in Turns. We went for a cup of klah."
"And you felt that catching up with an old friend was more important
than your duties in the infirmary?" Both eyebrows arched upward and
Vandor's smile vanished completely. "More important than the patients
who might need your assistance?"
She was startled. Almost every day of her life she was on time. "I
simply lost track of time and I'm sorry about that." she said in a
contrite tone trying not to anger him further. "I would never think that
visiting with a friend was more important than patients that need me."
Surely he didn't believe that.
The eyebrows lift further. "Indeed. Well then, since you feel our
patients are so important, you will be expected to come in an hour
earlier for the next month and stay an hour late."
Tavia sighed. She supposed she deserved that. "Yes sir" was all she
said. Three quarters of a candlemark late and she'd pay with multiple
candlemarks of makeup time. Of course she wasn't a Wingleader who
could pretty much have what he wanted when he wanted but she'd stayed
past when she knew she should leave so it was her own fault. "I really
am sorry Vandor." she said finally.
"I understand you have duties to attend to. That is one thing - your
dragonriding duties will always take precedent. However, if you
choose to continue your craft, I expect you to treat this with as much
sincerity as your dragonriding duties and get her on time as well put
in a hundred percent effort rather than allowing other desires to come
before this important work you have chosen to do." Vandor's tone was
gentle, yet stern at the same time. "Now, we have some patients to
take care of and I need your deft hands. So let's get to work."
At his use of 'other desires' she couldn't quite help the smirk that
flew across her face. She'd tried more than once to interest the big
healer in a little bed sport but he'd either ignored her or it went
over his head. She wasn't quite sure which. She shook off that train
of thought, feeling well satisfied for the moment. "Of course" she
said smoothing out her expression, and made to follow him.
