Almonteo flashed his most brilliant harper smile. "You must be River
Bluff's new Weyrwoman. It is a pleasure," he said with a low bow. "I'm
Almonteo, the Harper Hallmaster. Welcome to Dolphin Cove. It was a
brilliant Hatching, was it not?"
Turning, Rhosyn was caught off balance for a minute. Once it registered
just who she was speaking to, she nodded. "It was a good one. Glad it
all worked out well. Nice to meet you Harper."
"Is this your first visit?" he asked curiously. Though he had heard
plenty about this goldrider, this was the first time he had ever met
her, and he had always found that first hand information was the most
reliable.
"MM..never been to Dolphin Cove before." She glanced at some of the
other people nearby before bringing her attention back to him. "They
sure do put on a spread though. Good on the cook."
"Well, I truly hope you'll say the same about the music, since the
Harper Hall works in conjunction with the Weyr to put on a show." He
had heard this women held strong opinions, and was not afraid to voice
them.
"I'm sure you work hard. I was thinking about asking K'reyel for a dance
but I think he went that way.." It did seem as if the tail end of the
Wingleader could be seen through a few people. "Are things usually this
crowded at a Hatching?" She didn't think she wanted so many people at
River Bluff.
"Well, considering that at the moment the Weyr also encompasses two
Halls, yes." However, it would not be many more Hatchings before the
Harper Hall was located at Emerald Falls again. "It means if you want
food, though, you should put the dancing on hold and get yourself a
plate and a glass before the candidates' families and other guests
realize that it's going to go fast."
"One good thing about being a queenrider, people keep you fed."
Rhosyn wasn't too concerned. Besides, she had already been wined
during the Hatching itself. "So Master, have you been to River Bluff?"
"Yes, but it's been a long time." He had made sure to make the rounds
when he first became Hallmaster, but that seemed so long ago now. "Many
things have changed since then, even though it was only a couple turns
ago."
"Well the invitation's open. Hopefully it won't be too long before we
can throw a party." There was a small note in her voice. Rhosyn was
acting Weyrwoman until one of the golds rose.
"I would be delighted to visit your Weyr when I have a chance ma'am!"
Almonteo could not make any commitments just yet for his harpers, but it
certainly wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility that they could
send some harpers there to perform. The more understanding they could
foster between Hall and Weyrs, the better!
Harpers were invaluable teachers and Rhosyn knew that. Best not to
alienate them, when their help could get one a long way from where they
started. "Our Weyrharper has been extremely helpful as I'm getting my
bearings."
"I would like to meet him one day. I have enjoyed meeting the Weyr
harpers here at Dolphin Cove. We have so much to teach each other." Of
course, not everyone in his Hall shared his willingness to accept their
Weyr-trained colleagues.
"Since thread has come back, we have to work together-everyone."
She put stress on the word. Some liked to think they were above others,
but they were all equal in their fight against the menace.
The Harper's eyebrows quivered slightly. Was she trying to accuse the
harpers of something? "I certainly hope the harpers cannot be accused
of not doing their part."
"If they can, I am not aware of it. I am merely just saying how
important it is now for us to be of one mind and to communicate freely."
While Rhosyn understood the concept of autonomy, she didn't think it
truly existed during a Pass.
"Ah, I see," Almonteo nodded, smiling though the thought flittered
through his mind that it was easier said than done. "And have your
Holders been supportive in that way?"
"As far as I know, though K'sedel does more of the talking with the
Lord Holders than I do. That's his job." Rhosyn left him to it, though
she did want to meet the Lady Holders when she had time.
"I hear there is a former Lady Holder at your Weyr. That's a little
unusual, isn't it?" He tried to sound more casually curious than nosy.
Her abdication and the leaving of her husband had been quite the scandal
outside the Weyr.
"Aye, she's a Hears All, which makes her more than welcome." Rhosyn
thought briefly of Briata. Solieira liked her, so she had to be worth
it.
"Have you met the... young woman?" He had almost said 'lady', though
that could be taken as 'Lady', which would have raised questions about
which side of the issue he fell upon, and frankly he just wasn't quite
sure.
"I have, though it wasn't exactly a situation where we could chat." She
hated those sorts of visits, but it was part of her duties.
"You haven't received any backlash, I hope, from other Holders afraid
you are stealing their women?" Almonteo knew more than one looked at
the Weyr with suspicion even before the Lady Holder's escape.
"That was before I came." She shrugged, wondering just what Zharesti
had done. "Still and all, he gave her a divorce when he didn't have to
so perhaps it wasn't stealing." Rhosyn had been holdbred and she
understood those things. "If not, he could have come to the Weyr and
gotten her."
"Oh, I am not faulting the Weyr in the least," the Hallmaster amended,
realizing his question could be taken as such. "I am quite happy it
worked out so well for all involved."
"And anyway, if they kept their women pleased, they wouldn't be
running off now would they?" She lifted a brow, strangely echoing
what had happened to Briata without knowing it.
Well, that was a loaded question. "Have you ever been weyrmated, Lady
Rhosyn?"
"Have I had men? Aye. Have I ever...been that way, no. I think, with
queenriders, that it's different. Our dragons not only demand so much of
our time, but so do our Weyrs. The men that we see the most of-our
Weyrleaders-might change from turn to turn." Rhosyn knew very well what
her priorities were. "Not to say it wouldn't be nice..." She shrugged.
Then it was only natural that she wouldn't understand just how
complicated marriages could be. "Well, I can tell you from experience,
learning how to keep a woman pleased takes a lifetime. Even for the
best of men."
That caused her to laugh. "Well put, Master."
"I speak from my own tenure as a married man, of course." His ears
picked up the sound of the harpers warming up over the din. "It sounds
like we're getting ready to get started. Shall I escort you to your
table, ma'am?"
"Ah no, I'm fine. Was going to ahh..pick over what was left while
everyone else was busy dancing." She raised a brow.
