The plate was starting to get heavy. "Hello, Cardella, blink in from
/between/ please. We've got more dishes to go here."
"Oh," Cardella fumbled with the plate she'd been drying, nearly dropping
it onto the ground. She blushed and grinned sheepishly at her friend.
"Sorry, I was," she paused, "thinking." She couldn't hide the smile that
seemed to sneak onto her face as she thought of a certain someone.
Asarin wasn't stupid. She'd seen that look on plenty of girl's faces.
"Who are you thinking about?"
Cardella's cheeks turned a brighter shade of red, if that was possible.
Then she giggled a bit. "I met someone. He's so wonderful and kind." She
hadn't really told many people about her relationship with J'nev.
Talking about all of this was still new to her. "He's a bronzerider,
J'nev." She added.
Her friends eyebrows shot up. She wasn't sure if she was more surprised
at the fact that _Cardella_ had met a bronzerider, or at the name of the
man himself. "J'nev? Really?"
Her teeth bit her lower lip at Asarin's tone. Cardella felt a thrill of
excitement and uncertainty rush through her. It was exciting when people
where surprised by her news, but yet, why did they all seem so shocked
as well? "He's been very good to me," Cardella replied. Cardella's
checks
were still red as she thought about what things he'd already shown to
her
about life, herself, and relationships.
"Shards, J'nev..." Asarin laughed softly, shaking her head slightly.
"Well, maybe that's a good thing. I mean, he sure seems to be making
_you_ happy."
"I, well, I mean," Cardella fumbled over her words, blushing profusely.
Then, leaning in closer, she whispered, "I am _very_ happy. He's helped
me, and well, he wants to show me the _rest_." She raised her brows as
though indicating that Asarin should know exactly what Cardella meant.
"We had a bit of a misunderstanding a few days ago and I thought it might be
over, but we resolved it. Now, I want to see him again, but we've both been so
busy." Cardella shrugged her shoulders and went back to hurriedly drying
the dishes. Why had she felt the need to tell Asarin _all_ of that.
"You mean you haven't actually gone all the way yet?" Asarin asked,
eyebrows raised slightly. She didn't know J'nev was that patient and
understanding!
Well, that just made Cardella blush all the more! "Well, um, J'nev
wanted to, but I ruined things," she mumbled. And to boot, she hadn't
really spent any time with him since. Was he avoiding her on purpose?
Her eyes opened a bit wider as that thought crossed her mind. She'd assumed he'd
just been busy, but was he still angry with her?
That didn't surprise Asarin much. She was more shocked that Cardella
had let a man touch her at all! "Well, are you _going_ to do it?"
"I...I'm not sure?" Her words came out sounding more like a question
than an answer. "I like him, but, I'm frightened by it all. What do you
think I
should do?" Cardella gave her friend a very intense look as she waited
to hear her answer.
"Well, I can't see why you _wouldn't_." After all, Asarin had been
Weyrbred and had never held onto the romantic notions of the Holder
girls. "I mean, really, Cardella, what are you waiting for? Your
wedding day? Very few people actually marry in the Weyr, and if you
Impress you'll _have_ to get experience. Too many Holder girls have to
ask near strangers to bed them just to get it over with. You might as
well do it with someone you know _and_ like, right?"
Cardella gazed at Asarin as she considered her words.
"Perhaps you're right. I hadn't really thought of it that way. I'd much
rather it be someone I care about than a complete stranger." Cardella
raked her teeth over her bottom lip. "Thanks Asarin. I think I need to
go find J'nev soon!" She grinned and winked at her friend as she quickly
dried
off the dish in her hands and made to help with the last of the dishes.
"But if you are serious about this," Asarin whispered in a cautioning
tone, "you better start drinking the tea now."
Cardella stared at Asarin, the last of the dishes all but dangling from
her hand. "Tea? What does drinking tea have to do with anything?" Her
brows were knit in confusion as she tried to figure out what Asarin was
talking about.
"You know, the _tea_," her friend repeated, her eyebrows raising for
emphasis as she guided her friend's hand to the stack of plates before
she dropped one.
"Oh right, the _tea_," Cardella replied, trying to sound as though she
knew what Asarin was talking about. She hoped she pulled it off well,
for in truth, she had no idea what she meant. Cardella almost cursed her
family for keeping her so sheltered. Now how was she going to find out what
this special tea was?
