Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 23 of Turn 5
Aileyan knocked his door, the folded shirt resting on her arm. Timor was
with her, which was rare. The brown flit was nibbling her hair.
A surprised U'kaiah looked down at the greenrider when it opened.
"Aileyan?" Quickly glancing over his shoulder he leaned a bit closer
and asked softly, "Did we have plans to meet tonight?" He didn't
_think_ they did...
"No, we didn't. I found this when I was cleaning. Yours I believe?"
Aileyan answered and hold up the shirt.
"Oh, I was looking for that," he said, rather surprised. "Where was
it?"
"Behind sofa. You shouldn't throw your clothes all over my place," she
shook her head. "You're as bad as Ravyan," her eyes sparkled with
laughter.
"Well, I seem to remember I had help," he said with a knowing grin. The
bronzerider turned slightly at the sound of shuffling behind him. His
look when he turned back to the greenrider was almost guilty. "Thank
you for bringing it."
"You're welcome," Aileyan's eye brown's shot up with surprise. So, he
had company. She handed him the shirt, trying to squash down the feeling
of being betrayed. Hadn't they agreed to "no-ties" to bind them. He was
free to do as he pleased.
"U'kaiah?" A young woman appeared at his elbow. She was only an inch
or two taller than Aileyan, with chestnut brown hair and soft blue eyes.
"Should I go?"
"Oh, um... It's my shirt..." He looked between the two ladies, quite
torn about how to answer that.
His guest could see the surprised look on Aileyan's face, and could read
the bronzerider's all too well. "It's all right," she said, laying a
hand on his arm. "I think we're done for the day." She gave the
greenrider a small smile of acknowledgement. "I'll see you tomorrow
after drills?"
U'kaiah smiled down at her gratefully. "I'll come as quick as I can,"
he said, leaning down to kiss her cheek softly before she nodded to
Aileyan and slipped past them both.
His eyes followed her as she walked down the hall. "Sorry about that,"
he said, turning back to the greenrider. "Do you want to come in?"
"No, no thanks. I just brought you shirt back," Aileyan said. The
laugher in her eyes had died and guarded-look was back. She was not
supposed to feel anything for him, so why was she?
U'kaiah wasn't completely oblivious. "Your angry with me?"
"Of course not, why would I be?" Aileyan feigned indifference.
"Hey, come on, now," he said, reaching for her hand. "Was it her?"
U'kaiah nodded in the direction the woman had departed.
"I shouldn't be surprised. I knew your reputation when I got involved
with you," Aileyan said. Although it was more than surprise she had
felt.
"All right, two things," he said, holding up a finger for emphasis.
"First, I haven't slept with that woman in seven turns. That was
Kaiafel's mother and we have to go speak to the harper tomorrow about
some trouble he's having with some of the students in his class."
"Oh," she felt stupid.
"And second, yes, I've slept with a lot of women, and I will sleep with
more women. I was raised in the Weyr, not the Hold. There are very few
women that I have spent as much time with as I have you these past few
months. I enjoy being with you, Aileyan, and not just in the furs," he
said, his eyes searching hers to make sure she understood that point
clearly. "But I am not bound to you."
"I know that and I don't want you to be bound to me. It's just.." she
made helpless gesture. How she could put it to words when she couldn't
understand it herself?
He pulled her closer. "When I'm with you, it's because I want to be
with you, and no one else."
Aileyan allowed herself to be comforted, but a tiny part of her stayed
wary.
