Switching Hides

Writers: AL, Chelle
Date Posted: 29th August 2010

Characters: Meledei, Qorri
Description: Meledei drops off some misdelivered hides and the two of them chat.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 10, day 18 of Turn 5

Meledei rapped lightly upon the door that led to the Headwoman's office.
When given leave to enter, she opened said door and poked her head through
before allowing the rest of her to follow. "Good day to you, Headwoman."
The goldrider greeted cheerfully, parchment tucked beneath one arm. "I
hope you're well!"

Qorri had been quietly doing sums to make sure that everything was on
track for the upcoming hatching feast and the regular tithing needs. "Good
day to you weyrwoman." She stood up, straightening her skirts. "Can I help
you with anything?"

"Just some records to add to your collection." Meledei pulled the
parchment from beneath her arm and waved it playfully before setting it
down upon the Headwoman's desk. "Thought you could use them."

Qorri took them and looked over the contents quickly. "Oh thank you, I was
wondering where those had gotten to." She set them aside. "So how is the
youngest goldrider?"

"They were brought to me for some reason." Meledei shrugged and flicked
her hands to the door. "I think someone wasn't paying attention. I'm
doing all right. How are you?"

"Getting ready for the hatching. Things are in full swing." Qorri liked
having an event to plan for, though. She felt it showed off her talents
and she wanted the Weyr to look good.

"I guess one of these days you'll be helping to get ready for Elleth's
hatching." A small smile curled upward upon Meledei's lips. "Though
that's still some time away."

"Indeed. It'll be an exciting day to be sure." Qorri smiled, knowing that
for some, what led up to it was a scary experience, but she didn't bring
that up. "A grand party in her honor."

"Really?" Meledei's eyes twinkled at the idea. "The biggest party this
Weyr has ever known? Lots of cakes and pastries and food? And
decorations?"

"A first hatching is always very special so we'll definitely do it up
right." Qorri nodded her head. "You can have the candidates make all
the decorations you want."

"I could be evil," A gleam twinkled within Meledei's bright eyes, "And
say I won't allow them to stand if they don't help!"

"Now I don't think you need to go that far dear. And anyway, it's enough
if I give them the orders to do it. I assign chores after all." Qorri shook
her head. **Young goldriders and power...**

"I wasn't serious anyway. I'd never do such a thing," Meledei assured the
headwoman, as if reading her mind. "Besides, they're your jurisdiction, not mine - and I'm glad of it!"

"They can be a handful. Amazing how some of them end up riders." She
scribbled a note to herself on a scrap piece of hide. "And you probably
have enough to do."

"Tell me about it. And I'm not even the Weyrwoman." Meledei grinned
and shifted. "I suppose I'd better be getting back. It was nice to get to
chat with you for a little while though."

"Indeed. Come by anytime." Qorri threw a small package her way. "A muffin
for the road."

Meledei caught it easily and grinned. "Thanks Qorri! Nice to know I have
someone like you looking out for me. I'll catch you later." The young goldrider lifted a hand to wave as she turned to head out, taking a bite of her muffin as she did
so.
