Talryne

Talryne

She was trying to carry too much at once. The basket was piled high,
and the shirt at the top started to slide. When Talryne reached up to
try to stop it from falling, the whole basket spilled over. Half
finished clothing, thread, and balls of yarn all went tumbling to the
floor. Talryne swore and bent to pick up the mess.

Hearing the noise, Qorri went to investigate and spotted the other
woman. Bending down, she automatically began to gather things up.
"Here..." she offered a ball to Talryne.

Talryne still had trouble interacting with people she didn't know
well, and she didn't know this woman at all. She forced a smile and
took the offered yarn. "Thank you."

"No problem." Qorri continued to work quietly and it didn't take them
long to get everything back together. "Do you need help carrying any of
that?"

She almost said no automatically, but trying to carry all this to the
weyr was asking for another spill. "If you don't mind."

Grabbing a basket and throwing another over her shoulder, she waited
to be led to wherever the woman had been going. "No problem."

Feeling very self conscious, Talryne led her up to the Weyrleader's weyr.

It didn't take long for Qorri to realize where she was going. And then she
began to wonder why. Who was this girl? Maybe she was the... **Oh dear**

Talryne opened the door and set her basket down inside. "Thank you. I
didn't know what I wanted to work on so ... I brought everything."

"I know how that can be." Qorri set down the things she had been carrying
carefully, sparing a glance to make sure the weyr was clean as it should be.
"Anything else you need?"

Talryne didn't miss her glance and felt a little guilty at the mess
she'd left surrounding her chair. "No, I'm fine."

"Allright well I'll head on back down then, but if you ever need any food or
anything sent up, don't hesitate to let me know." How interesting.. Just when
she thought she knew N'vanik, something always threw her off.

"Um ... do you work in the kitchens?"

Qorri was a bit taken aback by that. Could she not read knots? "I'm
the Headwoman here."

"Oh ... _oh_." Talryne hadn't really _looked_ at the woman who had
helped her. Now she did, and she blushed at her mistake. "Sorry. I was
... I was distracted."

"It's okay.." **Awkward** "So do you like our Weyr then? Or do you still
need to get used to things?" Qorri wondered if she might still be wondering
what to do.

"I like it here. I'm ... it's comfortable." As comfortable as any
place could be, she guessed. She'd settled in, more than she thought
she could have.

"Do you play dragonpoker, Talryne?" Maybe if she could get her to
know a few people, it would help besides the crafters.

"I know how." Talryne couldn't help the cautious note in her voice.

"Would you ever want to join a game? Sometimes me and cookie
will have a go in the night." It gave them an excuse to smell the baking
bread and other good things.

Familiar fear started to flutter in her stomach. Unfamiliar situations
and people still worried her. It wasn't as bad as it used to be, but
she didn't know if it would ever go away. "Cookie?"

"Our night cook," Qorri supplied. "It's easier to say Cookie than to try and
shout Heimerishandier over the Weyr kitchens."

"That makes sense." A moment of silence followed. "Maybe I could try.
If ... if it's just the two of you."

"You're under no obligation, but if you ever think about it, we'll be around."
Qorri began to move toward the exit of the weyr, not wanting to pressure the
girl. "We're always up to no good." She smiled to belie her comment.

"Thank you. I'll think about it." It might not be so bad to give it a try.
