Cardella

As Candidate class ended, Resta hurried to catch up with Cardella.
"Hey! Was that you sneaking into the barracks right before lights out
last night? What were you up to, hmmm? I was looking for you!"

Cardella turned and looked at her friend, her cheeks turned a bright
shade of pink at the question.

"I, well," she blushed a bit more. Then grabbing Resta by the arm, she
pulled her off to the side. "I've met someone," she whispered with a
bit of a giggle.

Her friend's eyes flew open. _Cardella_ had met someone? She was so
shy and quiet! "What? Who? How?!"

Cardella shushed her friend, then grabbed her and pulled her further
away from any wandering eyes. "J'nev. He's a bronze rider. I," she
seemed to shrug her shoulders a bit, but her eyes were lit up, "met
him after the evening meal a sevenday ago. He's been...very
enlightening and so sweet to me." She giggled a bit again.

A _bronzerider_? "Enlightening?" her friend asked, eyebrows raised
questioningly. "You mean you've... gone to bed with him?" she asked in
a whisper.

Cardella's eyes opened wide. "No," she all but gasped out. "I didn't.
I couldn't. We just kissed, that's all." Cardella's voice came out in
a strangled whisper.

"What are you talking about, it's a _bronzerider_!" Resta gasped. "No
bronzerider has even looked at me _twice_! If one asked me to his bed
you'd better believe I'd go! You're bound to lose him if you don't
give
him a little something, you know. This is the Weyr."

Cardella blinked and chewed a bit on her bottom lip. "You really
would?" She asked a bit incredulous. "I don't want to lose him, but,
I'm just not sure. I mean, have _you_ been in anyone's bed yet? I
don't know what its like."

"Well of course I have," Resta said with a slight chuckle, as if it were
a silly question. After all, she had already stood on the Sands once.
"I wanted to fit in, didn't I? And I wanted the boys to like me. But
none of them were a _bronzerider_!"

"Oh," Cardella replied, looking at her friend in a new light. "I
didn't know," she whispered. She gnawed on her bottom lip a bit. She
liked J'nev. He'd been so kind to her, helping her, being her friend.
Was Resta right that she would need to show him more if she wanted him
to stay? "I'm...nervous Resta," Cardella murmured. "I wouldn't know
what to do." Cardella could almost feel an inner tug of war taking
place inside her. She wasn't sure which side would finally win.

"Well, everybody's nervous the first time." Maybe even the second or
third. "But you can't learn any other way but doing it. It will
be... uncomfortable... at first. But then it gets really fun. If he
does
it right. And he's a bronzerider, so he _should_ do it right. After
all, goldriders can't get enough of bronzeriders. They have to be
doing
something amazing!"

"Hmm," Cardella answered, her brow furrowing. "I don't know Resta. I'm
not sure it's the right thing to do." Cardella had a lot of questions
and a lot of uncertainty when it came to relationships and intimacy.
She'd enjoyed the kissing, but she really didn't know much about what
happened after that. There was _a lot_ of talk about things in the
kitchens, but it was all still so much a mystery to her.

"Oh Cardella," her friend chuckled, putting an arm around her shoulder
like she was the cutest thing ever. "It's going to happen eventually.
This is a _Weyr_, after all. If you Impress you're going to _have_ to
do it. Why not get it over with and enjoy it while you can?"

Cardella hadn't really thought of it that way before. She loved her
life in the Weyr now, and had even begun pursuing her craft as a real
apprentice just as the Weyrwoman had suggested. She didn't want to go
back to her life before the Weyr. So, perhaps, she _needed_ to
consider what Resta was telling her. "You've made a good point, Resta.
I'll think about," Cardella replied. She still wasn't completely
certain, but she had much more to consider now.

"Oh shards. It looks like we're going to be late if we don't hurry.
One more class," Resta sighed. But she squeezed her friend and
whispered conspiratorially, "but I want to get a look at your
bronzerider later, hmmm?"

Cardella smiled and giggled a bit. It felt good to share with someone.
She squeezed Resta's hand in return. "We better hurry."
