Description: K'deren and N'vanik chat about having daughters
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 10, day 3 of Turn 5
"Nice day for it, isn't it Sir?" K'deren was busily engaged in
carrying dragon washing supplies down to the water's edge to give his
brown a much deserved scrubbing.
"For dragon washing?" N'vanik asked.
"Yes," came the reply. "Not too hot or cold, and plenty of people around who
would just love to help." K'deren gestured in the direction of a small knot
of children playing, well within earshot of the riders and dragons.
Having lived in Dragonsfall, N'vanik didn't think it was possible for
Dolphin Cove to get too cold. "Convenient," he agreed. "So how's the
Wing doing?"
"Well," replied the brownrider. K'deren knew that a lot of bronzeriders
would covet the position of Wingsecond, he had a lot to live up to, and that
didn't include his family's reputation. "We've got a good group of riders
now."
N'vanik nodded as he stepped into the Weyrlake. "And we keep moving
closer to full Wings." With another Weyrling graduation or two, they
would have the same number of dragonpairs as the other Weyrs.
"Which will make it a little easier. " Not that threadfall was ever easy,
but the more people and dragons there were, the more likely they all would
be to survive the pass.
"Yeah, it'll be a nice relief."
"How is your daughter doing?" K'deren asked politely. "Is she settling in
as a fighting rider?"
"When I can get her to talk to me, it sounds like she's doing okay,"
N'vanik said with a smirk. He grabbed a handful of sweetsand and
started scrubbing Loseth's bronze hide.
"She needs her own space?" Rondera was like that, talking about moving from
her foster mother's into the candidate barracks just to gain some
independence.
"I think she still doesn't know how to deal with me. I don't blame
her. I'm not sure how to relate to her, either." Things had gotten
much better since she first appeared in his life, though.
"It takes time to learn about their personalities. I'm still doing that
winth my four." Even if one of them wasn't even his, K'deren treated him
that way as the boy had no contact with his actual father, and his mother
was now dead.
N'vanik made a face. "That's not very encouraging. You've had a huge
head start."
"They change as they grow up, one day they hate tubers and finger roots, the
next day it's bubbly pies they can't stand and they want cookies instead.
The same with their friends and their interests," explained K'deren after a
moment to think of the words to try and define it.
"So if I manage to figure her out, she'll just change on me?" It was
true that people changed all the time, but it was usually a gradual
process, not a sudden turn about. Children were confusing.
"Well she is older than my tribe, but she is still growing up, and into her
new role. Give her time to settle down, and you'll see her as she really
is."
"If she'll let me," N'vanik said with an amused grin.
"I'm sure she will. when she knows who she is, I'm sure she'll want others
to know that. In the meantime, make sure she knows that you are there for
her."
"Thanks." N'vanik leaned up to scrub at a higher spot. "I'll keep
hoping that she'll come around."
"She will," K'deren assured him.
