Description: The two go over some hatching details.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 9, day 10 of Turn 5
Sitting in his office, she had the hides she needed. A few lists were
necessary to cement some last minute details. This hatching
needed to go right-it would be her first as Headwoman. Determined,
Qorri waited for N'vanik to let her know he was ready.
N'vanik glanced over the list. Many of the names he didn't recognize,
and those he did were people he found boring or obnoxious. Or both. "I
suppose we have to invite them, don't we?"
"Aye, we'd never hear the end of it if we didn't. Leastwise, we feed 'em once
we don't have to see them again until the next one goes up." She shrugged,
feeling the same way.
"This is pretty much the same list as last time?" he asked.
"Pretty much. A few died. Added their heirs." She leaned over and pointed to
the few additions.
He nodded. "Well if it's pretty much the same, I'm just gonna sign
it." He took a pen and scrawled his name at the bottom of the long
list.
"Mmmkk..now any special requests for food?" She knew a few of his favorites
at this point, but wasn't sure what he'd want for the feast.
Food was, at least, an interesting subject. "Bacon. And as wide a
variety of bubblies as you can get."
"Bacon? As in bacon on sandwiches, fried, or wrapped with biscuits?"
Qorri smiled inwardly at this display. It reminded her that deep down
everyone still had their moments.
"Bacon as in fried, greasy slices you eat with your fingers." He smiled.
"Well I don't know about too horribly greasy. We can't have everyone
dying of heart attacks. I can do slices of bacon though." How strange a request,
she thought to herself. Qorri was a fan of baking bacon so that it was crispy
and not very greasy.
"Weyrfolk are too healthy to let a few pieces of bacon kill them. The
Holders can go ahead and die, though." A glint in his eye showed he
was joking. Mostly.
"Riiighhhttt... Okay so guests check. Food check. Entertainment..harpers..
are you going to make a speech?" Generally, the Weyrleader was supposed
to do a toast and welcome everyone, she was sure.
N'vanik made a face. "I suppose I should say something."
"You really should. Tradition and all that." She let him think about it,
wondering how long he wanted to speak for.
"Yeah, I know. I'll say a little something." He grumbled now, but he'd
be more enthusiastic about it when the time came. Hatchings put him in
a good mood.
Qorri checked that off. "Allright feast begins..then we come to the
entertainment. Weyrharper is in charge of that. And then we see
everyone home the next day."
"Yep. Do you think you've got a good handle on all this?"
"MM the cleanup will be the worst. You're handling transport which
will also be a nightmare." Qorri made a small hat tipping gesture with
a smile.
"It's not so bad. I get the Wingleaders and 'seconds to do most of the
work." He'd break up the list of guests that needed to be picked up
and give a chunk to each Wingleader.
"Delegation is a helpful tool indeed." Qorri checked her list one more
time. "Guest quarters have been arranged for those staying...Yes I do
believe that's it unless you want to bribe the Vintner Hall for more wine."
She looked at him speculatively.
"I don't bribe," he said. "But I might ask." It wasn't a bad idea to
have more wine.
"Either way..Let me know if it works out." She stood up, brushing off her
skirts. "If anything changes, I'll come back. Otherwise, good day to you
Weyrleader. I have fish to boil."
He nodded. "Good day."
