G'nir

G'nir

G'nir was trying to figure out way to cut in, but he couldn't find a one
he could use without being rude. He was left out and knew it.

"Maybe we could take our boys down to the Weyrlake," U'kaiah suggested,
remembering that Kaiafel had enjoyed teaching her son how to dig a pit
in the sand. "That is, if he can handle the dog."

"That sound fun," Aileyan agreed.

"How about in the evening? We can take our meal down there and maybe
after I drop Kaiafel back at his mother's and Ravyan falls asleep we can
have that drink?" Which would inevitably lead to more, they both knew.

Aileyan nodded.

"You know, I have son too, and a daughter," G'nir put in.

U'kaiah turned and gave the bronzerider a look of almost surprise. "Oh,
sorry, I didn't mean to ignore you. I didn't catch that."

Aileyan bit her lip to keep from laughing. The look G'nir gave to
U'kaiah could have frozen Thread.

"Did you say you had a son and a daughter? Well, maybe my son could
play with them another day?" he suggested with his sweetest smile.

"He lives in northner weyr. I see him only twice in month," G'nir
replied.

"That little?" Aileyan shook her head.

"You have to understand, Aileyan sees her son every day, which I have to
admit is unusual," U'kaiah said by way of being helpful. It was obvious
G'nir didn't know the greenrider at all. "But as her wingleader, and as
her friend, I completely support her decision."

"Why did you choose so?" G'nir asked from Aileyan.

"Because I can only have one child and he's precious to me," she glared.
It was rather touchy subject.

"Though I would support her, if she decided to have more." She seemed
to have been one of those born to have children, in U'kaiah's mind.
Very few greenriders ever sacrificed as much as she did to spend time
with their children, and he had to admit he respected her for it,
despite the fact that it could at time interrupt his plans for the
evening.

"The healers wouldn't," Aileyan sighed.

"Oh. physical problem?" G'nir guessed, she was rather small-sized after
all.

"Too narrow pelvis," she shrugged, not wanting to dwell on it.

U'kaiah laid a hand on her thigh, out of sympathy rather than
flirtation. It was new information to him. "I can understand why he's
so important to you then."

Aileyan just nodded. She really, really didn't want to talk about it.

The wingleader turned back to G'nir. "And what about your daughter?
Can't she come and play?"

"I fostered her with my parents, she lives in hold," G'nir replie,
shaking his head.

Aileyan's eyebrown's rose. "Well, that's unusual."

The older bronzerider shrugged. "I thought it was best, when her mother
died. She's surrounded by loving kin."

"In the South?" U'kaiah asked doubtfully.

"She lives in Lord Holder's family. What better future you can offer for
your daughter," G'nir said.

Aileyan could imagine several. Based on what she had heard, daughters in
ruling families were nothing but breeding stock.

U'kaiah voiced the greenrider's thoughts. "A Weyr, perhaps? Her
options would be rather limited in a Hold, I should think. Especially
since I hear they don't take kindly to what they call 'bastards'."

"My mother would put down any talks like that," G'nir said stiffly.

"Well, I wish her luck." U'kaiah turned back to the greenrider. His
meal was finished, but he wasn't sure she would like being left with her
wingmate that much. "Aileyan, may I walk you wherever your next
appointment is?"

"Sure," Aileyan nodded. She had also done with her meal. "Bye, G'nir,"
she said.

"It was nice talking with you," the bronzerider replied. He still had
food left. ** Well, seems like I lost this round**, he thought when he
resumed eating.
