Adella glanced about the Dining Cavern, looking for a free spot to
sit. It was exactly midday and the place was full of people. It was
the worst time to try to get lunch because of the crowd, but one
didn't always have the option of taking an early or late meal. Her
rueful thoughts were broken when she spotted an empty seat next to a
fellow candidate and made her way over quickly before it was nabbed by
someone else.

"Hello, Shawnyta!" She offered a smile, fueled as much by relief in
finding a place to sit as by happiness to see the other girl.

"Hi Adella," Shawnyta scooted over, giving the other girl more room to
sit and eat. "It's busy in here today."

"It is!" Adella agreed, reaching for a salt shaker. "I hate taking
lunch at midday, but we all drew lots and this is what I drew." She'd
been working with a few other non-crafter candidates on a project to
organize and clean out some of the older, less used storage rooms. It
was a dirty job that had taken three days so far, but was nearing
completion. In order to get it done faster, she and the other
candidates had agreed to draw lots to determine when they'd take
breaks, so someone was always working on the project, even during
regular mealtimes.

The healer grinned, "Me too, but in the infirmary, we take our breaks
when we can. I usually miss this crowd because I get so busy that I
don't get the chance to eat until later."

"I prefer an early lunch, myself." It was most probably her
imagination, but she always felt the food was tastier about a
candlemark before midday. Fresher, somehow. "Must be why I never see
you at lunch," Adella grinned.

"Us healers can work some odd schedules, I'll admit." Even in as short a
time as they'd been there, she was almost done with her food. You
learned early on to eat quickly while you had the chance, lest some
emergency happen and you had to go running to it on only a few bites
of food. Taking a sip of her klah, she looked at Adella. "So have you
been getting into any good mischief lately?"

"Not any -good- mischief, no." Adella grinned before taking a bite of
food. In truth, the last few days she'd been to tired to do much of
anything in the way of 'mischief.' "You?"

Grinning regretfully, Shawnyta shook her head. "No, I've been much to
busy in the infirmary. I did meet a bluerider though, who seems to
have promise." She waggled her eyebrows suggestively

"Oh?" Adella turned a bit in her seat to face her friend and leaned
forward. "Do tell!"

The healer's gaze grew a bit dreamy as she thought about D'cal. "He
is a wingrider in Hurricane Wing. We met in the bathing pool after the
last threadfall. We had dinner and spent all night in his weyr talking
and getting to know each other."

"Just how well did you get to know him?" Adella asked with a grin.
She'd been shocked when she'd first come to the Weyr, but after three
turns, she was much more used to the ease with which people 'got to
know' each other here. She'd even gotten to know a couple of boys
herself, in the last few months.

Shawnyta grinned. "Really well. And how about you? Anyone special?"

"Not 'special' per say," Adella replied after a moment's hesitation.
"But you remember Tralen? Well we've been getting to know each other a
bit lately." The first boy she'd 'gotten to know' had been a bit of an
accident. A little too much wine at a birthing day celebration the
night before a restday and she'd fallen for the boy's line about not
waiting until she Impressed so her first time wouldn't be during a
mating flight. If she'd been in her right mind, she'd never have
fallen for that. Then, he hadn't talked to her again.

Tralen was different though. She'd only consented to 'get to know' him
recently, still smarting from the way the other boy had basically just
used her. But he'd been willing to wait and it had been -much- nicer.
They weren't 'involved' the way she thought a couple should be - and a
small part of her was still aghast that she wasn't married to either
of the boys she'd bedded. Friends with benefits would be an apt term
though.

"I think so. I don't know everyone as well as I should since I don't
live in the candidate quarters, but as you know, I do try to spend
time with the others as much as possible. So tell me more about
Tralen." Shawntya was really enjoying her time talking to Adella.
"He's weyrbred, you know. So, even before we were 'getting to know'
each other, he was very helpful." Tralen had moved to the candidate
barracks when he got old enough to Stand so his foster mother would
have room to take in another. "He's very sweet and has the most
amazing hands," she grinned over at her friend.

Shawnyta grinned back. "That's always a plus." She ate the last of her
food and washed it down with the last of the klah that was cooling in
her mug. "Well, I'd better get back, but I'd like to spend some girl
type time with you soon. Maybe you can come over and we can talk more
about our guys tonight or tomorrow?"

"Yeah, I'm going to get in trouble with the others if I don't hurry
back, myself." Adella began gathering up her plate and things. "I'll
come over during free time tonight. I want to hear more about this
dragonrider of yours." She gave her friend a grin.
