Two at Once

Characters: J'nev, Aileyan, U'kaiah
Description: Aileyan takes on two bronzeriders at once!
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 4 of Turn 5

J'nev had just enough to drink to make him feel bold. Another Fall was
finished, and he had suffered his very first Threadscore. The alcohol
had dulled the pain somewhat, but now he had another kind of medicine in
mind as he eyed the greenrider. She had brushed him off before, but let
her see his new battle scar and she just might think differently!

Grabbing a wine skin and bidding his friends goodbye for the evening, he
slid up beside her. "Have a drink with me, Aileyan. We survived
another Fall and it's cause to celebrate."

"Thank's, but I don't really like to drink," the petite greenrider said.
She really didn't like drunk peopel either. She herself rarely allowed
herself more than one glass.

"Ah, but I need to celebrate. Look!" He pulled up his sleeve to reveal
his bandaged forearm. "I got it on my bicep too. I was this close to
dying," J'nev said, holding his fingers up just inches apart in
emphasis. "Isn't that worth at least a glass?"

The score didn't look so big to her. She had certainly seen worse. "You
can drink as many glasses you want," she said, turning away.

"Yes, but, it's not good to drink alone. You can get into trouble that
way," he said with a smile, though she didn't see it. J'nev decided to
try a different tactic. "All right, I'll drink and you don't have to.
But won't you at least keep me company? I... I don't want to be alone
right now. I just... keep seeing that Thread coming at me..."

She didn't buy that either, his tone just wasn't sincere enough. She
gave him disgusted look. "I'm sure you can find someone else to hold
your hand. Or I can borrow my son's stuffed toys."

"Oh, come on, now," J'nev protested, rather frustrated at his lack of
success. "What have I ever done to you? You're always so mean to me!
Why?"

"I don't know," Aileyan shrugged. She didn't think she was mean.

"Listen, I know I'm not all that smooth with girls," the bronzerider
said with a very serious expression on his face. "I wasn't Weyrbred
like a lot of the riders were. You don't talk to girls this way out
there. I don't _know_ what I'm doing to offend you. I'm just trying to
get to know you. What am I doing wrong here, Aileyan?"

"You come a cross too strongly. I'm hold bred too, and to me it just
looks like you try to get me into your bed. If you want to know me, take
a different approach," Aileyan found herself advising the young man.

J'nev unwisely chose the humor approach. "All right, how about honesty?
Can I get you into bed?"

"No," the answer came with flat tone.

He threw his hands up in exasperation. "Oh, come on. You were supposed
to laugh! It was a joke!"

"You have to learn better timing, J'nev." A more experienced
bronzerider stepped up behind Aileyan, rather amused at the younger
man's failing attempts. Course, U'kaiah hadn't faired much better his
first time trying to impress this particular greenrider.

"Oh, hello U'kaiah," Aileyan greeted, feeling slightly relieved.

U'kaiah gave her a quick wink as he stepped up even closer behind her,
resting his hands lightly on her hips. "One of the first lessons you
should learn, J'nev, is that those kinds of words should never be spoken
in jest. That leads to confusion of what your intentions really are."

J'nev was almost drunk enough to tell his Wingleader to butt out.
Almost but not quite. Instead his jaw just tightened as the red crept
into his face and being lectured in front of a woman. Not only
lectured, but shown up as well! **Whery's ass! I knew he didn't like
him!**

"Bronzeriders and their egos," Aileyan muttered very quietly and shifted
so his hand fell from her hip. If the Wingleader thought he owned
her....

"See," U'kaiah said, raising his finger to make a point. "It's all
about timing. Shall I leave your young suitor, Aileyan? Or would you
like to join me for some dessert?"

"I think I just retreat to the ladies room," she said, she was getting
exasperated with both of them.

J'ven grinned to see the Wingleader put down publicly. "Thanks for the
lesson, sir."

"You're welcome," U'kaiah muttered. That was the last time he was going
to save Aileyan, that was for sure! She seemed to be able to handle
herself.
