J'nev moved a little closer to the greenrider. "That Wingleader sure
likes to talk a lot," he whispered.
"Mmm," Aileyan murmured, "It's his job."
"Do these things usually last this long?" He had felt like he was back
in weyrling classes the way the man just went on and on...
"Not that long. It must be his harper-back ground," Aileyan replied.
He looked at her out of the corner of his eye. She was rather pretty.
J'nev liked her eyes. "Well, I graduated my Harper classes quite some
time ago. I wish he'd get on with it."
Aileyan suppressed a giggle and flashed him amused smile.
"I'm J'nev, by the way. Rider of bronze Ankioth." He made sure to
include the color since it seemed to make a bit of an impression.
Great, another, young cocky bronzerider, Aileyan nearly rolled her eyes.
"Aileyan, Kjarliheth's rider," she replied. She didn't tell her dragon's
colour, she felt it unnessessary. He would know she rode green, for gold
riders weren't placed to fighting wings.
"I'm new," he offered, trying to keep the conversation going. "To the
wing I mean. Not to the Weyr. But any advice you could give me would
be appreciated."
"I can give you one now: don't disturb the wing meeting," Aileyan said.
They were getting at the most interesting part, shifts in wing
placements, and she wanted to hear if her position had changed. She
hoped not, since she liked her current one. They had gotten new
additions and that always meant shuffling people around.
So far he didn't think he was disturbing anything. "You mean like talk
too loudly?"
"Shush," Aileyan's brows wrinkled when she hushed the boy.
J'nev snorted as he listened to the Wingleader. "It's just wing
placement. He'll pass out a sheet with the same sharding information.
It would certainly save time if he just handed it out and let us read it
for ourselves."
Aileyan just sighed. Sometimes the tone of voice was more important than
the words. Her childhood in harper hall had taught her that.
"So, how old are you?" he asked quietly, trying not to be too loud since
that seemed to annoy her.
"Eighteen," she replied from corner of her mouth, although she felt like
she was twice that age.
"Hey, me too," he whispered, glad to find someone his own age so fast.
"Have you been in the wing long?"
"About two turns," Aileyan replied.
"You're a veteran then," he smiled again. "Could we have dinner or a
drink sometime? It would be good to make a friend in the wing, seeing
as I'm new here and all..."
"We shall see," Aileyan said neutrally, not wanting to commit herself
into anything.
"Tonight?"
"Sorry, I have previous engagement, with my son," Aileyan replied. She
hope the knowledge she had a child would discourage him.
It did. A bit. "And his father?" J'nev asked, trying not to let any
disappointment show.
"Not around any longer," she replied with indifferent shrug.
Oh, well then, there was some hope! Dragonriders couldn't raise their
children full time, he knew! "Tomorrow then?"
"Don't know yet," Ailayan shrugged. Didn't he get the point from her
tone of voice? It was definently non-interested one. Last thing she
wanted was another man in her life. Between Ednan and U'kaiah, she didn't
know which way her heart would turn.
He could tell she was trying to play hard to get, and he was not
daunted. "So, I can ask you tomorrow then?"
This time she did roll her eyes. "I not interested, get it?" she said
more sharply this time.
"Wow, what a welcome to wing," he said, actually taken aback slightly.
"I wasn't asking to _sleep_ with you." Not yet at least.
