Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 4 of Turn 5
"Sir," K'deren nodded in greeting as he addressed the Weyrleader. "I just wanted to drop some hides off with you for your signature before they go to the archives."
N'vanik shifted the hide he was working on over to make room. "What are they?"
"Evaluations," explained the Wingsecond. "Overall they are quite good."
"Anyone you think has rank potential?"
"Yes. We've a young bluerider, T'sap who could make a good wingthird in a turn or two. He may be young, but he has a good head on his shoulders," was K'deren's reply after a moment or two. "I was going to discuss whether or not to assign him to mentor some of the newly graduated weyrlings with K'hetah."
"Ahh ... that's a good idea." N'vanik nodded. It would benefit the weyrlings, and it would give T'sap some experience with responsibility.
"Although I did wonder if some of the bronze and brownriders that came to our wing would be happy about listening to a bluerider who is younger than some of them." T'sap had barely seventeen and a half turns, he'd impressed his blue when he was but thirteen, so had had that time to gain experience.
"If they do, you can set them straight ... or send them to me." They should have learned to respect riders younger than them but with more experience when they were weyrlings. Some of the weyrlingstaff were only twelve or thirteen turns old.
"Oh believe me, I will set them straight,. I usually find that a few candlemarks of watch duty at night provides enought 'thinking time'."
N'vanik chuckled. "It didn't set me straight, but it seems to work for others." Grounding frustrated him enough to make him want to avoid it, but most of the time it had been people that set him straight. Their faith and trust in him, his desire to be better because of them.
"Well, that's the first thing that'll happen. Usually with the new wingriders it makes them realise what a pain it is to have to get up in the middle of the night and not get much sleep before drills."
"Well, hopefully they won't have a problem with it. T'kob did a good job with them." N'vanik was glad he hadn't misplaced his trust in the young Weyrlingmaster.
"So it seems," agreed the Wingsecond.
"Is there anything else you want to point out in the reviews?" N'vanik would scan them later, but he didn't want to miss anything important.
"Not at the moment Sir," came the response.
"Alright. I'll need a few days to look over these and sign them. Do you need them back, or should I take them straight to the archives?"
"The archives need them more than we do."
N'vanik shifted the stack to one side of his desk. "I'll take them when I'm done, then. Thanks, K'deren."
"You're welcome," came the response.
