Vandor tried to lighten the conversation after that and soon enough the two had come to the Weyr's docks. The big man paused, then took note of a female Dolphineer nearby. Yes, female would be better. While he was a male healer, it didn't hurt to have a female working with him when dealing with this sort of thing. Granted, Sorsha knew him, but still. "Pardon me." Vandor called out as they drew closer to the woman. "Have you and your dolphin a moment to spare?"
Trellyn looked up from where she was weaving a new sun hat, and had to keep looking up until she saw the large healer looming over her. She recognized him, he'd been down once or twice before with patients, but not with the one he had now, she'd never seen her before. "Vandor right? There aren't any here at the moment, but I can see if one wants to come by. What's going on?"
"We need to see if this young woman is pregnant." One hand gently lay upon Sorsha's shoulder, though it swept away but a moment later. "If one would oblige us, we'd be appreciative."
She looked between the healer and rider and eventually nodded, heading toward the small dolphin bell at the edge of the dock. There were several greenriders who used to come down every sevenday or two in order to check for pregnancy. They seemed to think the dolphins were like a runner, to be used whenever they deemed fit. Trellyn had eventually run them off, refusing to call the dolphins for them anymore. Vandor didn't seem the sort to abuse the dolphins, and had always been polite to them.
Trellyn rang the 'come in' sequence, the least urgent of the bell sequences. If a dolphin was in the area and felt like coming by, one would. The dolphin could refuse though and feel no guilt about shirking duty. It wasn't long though before she saw three forms slicing through the water coming near. "Looks like you're in luck. You'll need to get in the water for them to examine you."
Sorsha nodded, looking around briefly for onlookers before stripping down and taking the ladder into the water. It wasn't that she was concerned about Vandor seeing her, nudity inside the Weyr was so common, it didn't matter. On the docks though, there could have been visiting ship crews, and they would have viewed her body quite differently than the healer would.
Vandor didn't strip and he didn't come in with them. He didn't need to. Trellyn was capable and she knew the dolphins. Vandor had picked upon a few things and a couple of the dolphins sort of knew him, but he still wasn't a dolphineer. They were in Trellyn's territory, he'd let her do her job. Still, he watched and waited.
The exam didn't take long. The dolphins were eager to help, but after circling Sorsha a few times, could find no sign of pregnancy. "Nooo Baybee. Nooo Small Baybee."
"Thank you for checking." Sorsha said to the dolphins as she took Trellyn's lead and gave the nearest one a scratch on the melon.
"Anything else I can help you with?" Trellyn asked the healer as she came up the ladder and grabbed the nearest towel. The temperatures were a little bit too cool for her to just drip dry.
Vandor shook his head. "No, that is all. I appreciate your assistance, Dolphineer Trellyn." The big man turned to Sorsha and smile. "Ready to head back?"
"Sure." Sorsha said as she toweled off herself, then slipped on the simple tunic and pants. "So what now?"
"We take a walk." Vandor raised his hand to bid Trellyn goodbye, then turned and walked with Sorsha away from the docks. "The dolphin didn't mention any other issues. I think he would have if he'd seen something wrong."
"So I'm healthy." Sorsha surmised. Both pleased and somewhat disappointed she wasn't pregnant. It wasn't that she had time to be pregnant right now, she'd never graduate if she couldn't go /between/, but someday she wanted Ri'len's children. "Do I just keep going then? How will I know if I get pregnant? I don't want to not realize it and then miscarry. If I get pregnant I want to keep it."
"Well, we can ask if Trellyn would be willing to do periodic checks. Of course, you'll have to be so far along before even the dolphins can see." Vandor pondered the situation for a moment. The body was a well bit, but some times delicate system - especially when it came to the female reproduction system. "You've been under a lot of stress lately, too. That could probably affect how your body is handling things. I've seen women who had consistent cycles get strange ones after impression and even a few months after they graduate in wings." He cast a sidelong glance at the girl. "It may be your body reacting to the stress, taking away something in order to handle it better."
"So wait." Sorsha said again. The suggestion of the periodic checks eased her concerns a bit, but it still wasn't an answer. She knew though that when it came to the body that sometimes there wasn't one to be found.
"For now. Check in with me or Chelly, keep us updated. Let us know if Trellyn and her partner find anything." He doubted they would, and Vandor had a feeling he was probably right on the answer. "If it's what I think it is, though, eventually your body will come to terms with things and you'll be back to normal."
