Description: J'darin sends a note via Oak to T'mahl discussing N'vanik's condition for transfer.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr, Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 4 of Turn 5
Breathing a sigh of relief, J'darin left N'vanik's office and called Hasaarth for a ride to their weyr. As his bronze descended, he also called to Oak, the brown flit was playing by the beach somewhere, and sent a picture of their weyr so the flit could meet him there.
Hasaarth seemed content with the knowledge they'd be leaving Dolphin Cove and going back to the place he Hatched and lay happily down to resume his interrupted nap. Silly bronze. It was all so _easy_ to dragons.
If only it was that easy for their riders.
Seeing his bronze settled, J'darin went inside to a table and took out a slip of hide and began to write.
Weyrleader T'mahl,
My regards to you. I write to pass on the information that N'vanik has approved my transfer to Dragonsfall. However, he added a condition neither your nor I foresaw. He would like an experienced rider, preferably brown or bronze, that Impressed before Thread returned, to agree to transfer to Dolphin Cove in my place. A rider "swap" so to speak. he will not allow the transfer unless we can provide this to Dolphin Cove.
I understand his motivation for it; this Weyr is entirely too understrength for anyone's peace of mind, as of yet, though there seem to be less holes. I would probably have asked for the same thing in return, given the state of Dolphin Cove. Is this something you would agree to do? I doubt I am worth alot of trouble to you, and will of course stay in Dolphin Cove do you find yourself unable to agree to this request. I thank you again for your trust and willingness to take me back...home. Send back a note via Oak if you like, then I can hand it to N'vanik.
Regards, J'darin
Oak finally appeared from his frolicking down by the beach and J'darin rolled the hide up small and attached it to Oak's leg. The flit was familiar with Dragonsfall since he had been Hatched there, so J'darin sent a picture of T'mahl to flit and asked him to take the message.
The Weyrleader received the message and, after locating a plate of scraps to keep the little flit occupied, wrote a quick reply.
J'darin-
Best regards to you and Hasaarth. I got your message. As a former a Werylingmaster and Weyrleader, I was prepared to part with much more than that. I hope you don't feel offended at being traded for so little, though I would hardly call brownrider Z'rin nothing. He could have Wingsecond potential in another few turns perhaps. If I can get both a Weyrlingmaster and keep my own bronzes, though, I will do so and count myself lucky!
Thank you for the message. This is indeed good news! I look forward to formalizing your transfer in the near future!
T'mahl
The Weyrleader tapped his pencil against the hide, considering a moment that perhaps he could throw in a young bronzerider as a gesture of goodwill, but really, giving N'vanik J'nev was not much of a bonus. More like throwing out the trash, really. No, he would keep him and hopefully trade him for an experienced brownrider in the future. Or maybe the boy would surprise them all and shape up.
Either way, T'mahl had gotten a very good deal in this arrangement and felt rather pleased with himself as he tied the message onto Oak's leg. He just hoped, as he looked at the now empty plate, that the little thing could still get off the ground and deliver it!
Oak, despite his very round tummy, could deliver it and he chirped a thank you as he disappeared /between/, returning to J'darin's side in triumph.
J'darin took the message from Oak and smiled, his face split wide. It was done! N'vanik might not be happy, completely, with a brownrider in place of a bronzerider, but the conditions were filled. All that was left was to move.
He thought of next Fall; it was on the 10th. He would move to Dragonsfall on the 12th.
Move....
