Not Going To Die

"Really, it's not that bad. Just a break." Sorsha tried to assure Ri'len as he stared at her with a worried look on his face. He'd been with her from the moment she'd landed and had heard everything the healer had said when she'd arrived at the infirmary, but he still didn't seem satisfied.

"Just a break?" Ri'len shook his head, the worry still clouded his face. "Just a break...breaks aren't that simple."

She squeezed his hand with her mobile one. "Six sevenday and I'll be good as new."

"Breaks aren't good. You could die from a break." Ri'len's voice was steady and his face pinched. "You're taking it easy. Don't move too much, I'll take care of your chores."

Sorsha rolled her eyes. "I swear Ri'len, you're worse than my father. I'm not going to _die_, and after this cast dries, I'll be able to do my chores just fine."

"You _could_ die." Sorsha didn't get it. Breaks were far from minor injuries and could cause other things. "I've seen it."

"Maybe back at Willet Grove, but we've great healers here at the Weyr." She pointed to the cast, "They wouldn't have sealed it up if they weren't sure it was okay."

"Clots." Ri'len stated firmly. "They're a danger when you have broken limbs."

She sighed, she hated it when Ri'len worried for her so much. What she hated most was that she knew if something very bad ever happened to her that he'd be completely devastated. "I don't want to talk gloom right now, let's talk about something else."

"All right." Ri'len was going to have to make sure Sorsha took it easy. He'd take care of Roseth for her, make her rest as much as possible. "F'gol mentioned a Gather."

"Oh?"

"It sounded like fun. It's not for another couple of sevendays, but if the healers say it's all right, I thought we could go." Ri'len hoped she could, it would be a nice distraction.

Sorsha looked down at her arm. "T'kob said my flying would be limited. He said I couldn't do drills any more until my arm healed. I don't know if that includes going /between/ or not."

"We'll ask. If not, we'll go to one as soon as you're able." Ri'len wondered if any of the Southern holds would have a gather some time soon. He'd have to find out.

"I won't be graduating with you." Sorsha suddenly realized. "I won't be Blooding with you either I guess."

"I know." That was almost as bad as having her break her arm in the first place. Ri'len gently slid his arm over her shoudler, careful of her injury and kissed her upon her cheek. "You'll just graduate later."

Sorsha felt her eyes swell with tears, she'd been tough ever since they'd set her arm, but now she felt disappointment fill her. "But I wanted to graduate with _you_. We were doing this _together_."

Ri'len frowned as he heard Sorsha's voice tremble. "I can ask to be held back. To take time off to take care of you."

For a moment she was filled with hope, then reality made her feel guilty for even thinking it. "No. You need to graduate. They need bronzeriders for the wings badly. You can't wait for me just because I don't want to be alone."

"I don't want you to be alone." Ri'len wished he could do something to make her feel better, somehow heal that arm so she could just go right back where she needed to be. "I want to be with you."

"I'll be watching at least, cheering you on." Sorsha said with as much enthusiasm as she could muster. "When I'm back at drills, you can maybe cheer me on too when you're not with your wing."

"Definitely." But Ri'len was still going to have a talk with T'kob. He could at least ask, and the worst the Weyrlingmaster could say was no.
