Mine - All Mine

Writers: AL, Jane
Date Posted: 6th November 2009

Characters: Leisenn, Minara
Description: Leisenn's old friend, Minara, arrives for her promised visit to the Hall.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 6, day 1 of Turn 5

"Ah my old friend!" Minara embraced Leisenn with enthusiasm and strength that belied her age. "It is so good to see you again. How I have missed you!"

"And I've missed you, Min. How was the journey? Tu," she indicated the dolphin out in the bay walking on his tail (with mixed success) in celebration, "said he'd found your ship."

"The journey was long, but uneventful." Minara turned her gaze toward the sea and waved to the dolphin. "I thought that was him, but he wasn't still long enough for me to be sure. So how are things?"

The Hallmaster nodded, her expression almost smug for she was well-pleased with the Hall she had come to lead. "Very good. Have you got many bags? I can carry your voyage one up if you'd like. The Headwoman will organise for the others to be taken to your room."

"I have two." Minara packed light, and the two bags she did bring were small. She didn't really need much, especially for just a visit. "Between us we can carry them ourselves."

"Ahh, still independent Min?" If so why was her friend heading off to live with her daughter? It was an unfair thought. Perhaps if Leisenn had had a daughter she too would be thinking of retiring ... Or even if there had been daughters-by-marriage that she had got to know. "Come on, then. Let's get these bags and I'll show you my domain."

Minara took up one of her bags and let Leisenn carry the other. She followed her friend and chatted with her amiably. She was quite glad to see her again and knew the time she would be there was going to fly by. She was going to enjoy it, regardless.

"Up these steps - The place used to be a SeaHold. Bigger than we need right now, but it's proved very suitable." Leisenn nodded at the tall doors at the top of the flights of steps. "A little more than functional in some areas."

"It's lovely here. Does it ever get cold?" The question was a bit off the subject, but the question just struck Minara. She had always been close to the sea, but it could get quite cold back home.

"No, not really. It's quite an even temperature inside, though, because the building is part of the cliff." Leisenn smiled. "I don't miss it. The cold. Would you?"

"Oh yes." There was no lie in her tone and Minara chuckled. "Surely you miss the snow. I have always liked cold weather. I've never lived anywhere without it."

"Not really. Remember that I was working - when it got really cold we went with the dolphins to warmer places."

"That's true." Minara had always stayed and enjoyed the chilly days and chillier nights. "It must have been quite an adjustment coming here, though."

"I think the adjustment's been in becoming Hallmaster." Leisenn paused inside the main doors into the Hall and gestured about her at the lofty foyer. "I'm feeling a totally different sort of possessiveness about somewhere I'm in charge of." Her lined and weathered face was creased with her smile. "Mine. All mine!"

"You're scary when you say that." Minara's face crinkled into a smile, though and she looked around at the foyer. "Very nice. So have you adjusted or are you still in the process of doing so?"

"I think I'm adjusted - but of course I'm interested in what you think. Come up to your room. They're small but all quite lovely, and then we can have something to eat and drink down in the dining hall. The stairs are all right for you, aren't they?"

"The view must be something indeed." The sand was whiter there and sparkled in the sunlight. The sand where Minara was from had a darker tone and while it held its own beauty, it was quite a bit different. It also seemed to be rockier, which could make things dangerous if one wasn't careful. "Lead on, I shall follow."

"I can't wait to show you around," Leisenn said over her shoulder as she led the way up the stairs. "But you must say if I'm making you do too much."

"No, not at all, not at all." Minara felt like she had bounds of energy and she was eager to see the rest of the Hall. "Drag me everywhere, I'm up for it."

As they walked along the wide corridor the two old ladies chattered away like the young girls they had once been when they had joined another Dolphin Hall, long ago.
