"Phew, I am so tired." Meledei sighed as they came to the end of their chores. They had been assigned as assistants to riders who were pregnant or injured. Several dragons required washing and oiling and while they weren't the only weyrlings assigned, it was still a lot of work. "Maybe I should spend my free time sleeping."
Sorsha laughed, "My father used to say that you can sleep when you're dead. He always had too much to do what with running a hold _and_ a fleet."
"He certainly sounds like a busy man." Meledei grinned as she wiped a bit of sweat from her brow. "We have free time now. Maybe a bath is in order."
"You don't want to smell bad for F'gol?" She teased. When she saw Meledei's cheeks redden she burst out laughing. "You don't do you! What is _with_ you two lately? You seem to be even more inseparable than usual."
"We're...courting." Meledei knew that some of the weyrlings and certainly most dragonriders would think them strange if they gave voice to such an admission. Sorsha, however, might be less inclined to think so.
"Really?" Sorsha was surprised into silence for a moment. She didn't think people did that at the Weyr. Still, somehow, it suited Meledei. She'd never of thought F'gol would have gone for it though. "Well... it's about time. I wondered if he was ever going to realize that he adored you."
"There was a short time where I thought nothing would come of us." The young gold weyrling admitted with a small smile. "He seems intent upon sulking over the fact that things have changed because he's impressed."
While Sorsha didn't often have alot of tolerance for F'gol's moods, she did feel sorry for him about that. "He didn't want to be a dragonrider, he didn't choose this life. That's got to be hard." Sometimes she still had doubts that she'd be able to spend her life as a thread fighting dragonrider.
"Yes." Meledei nodded. She couldn't understand that, but..."But at the same time, he seems to think that he can't have _any_thing. He thought we couldn't have a relationship simply because we're dragonriders. We even had an argument about it."
Sorsha snorted and waved her hand in dismissal. "He just likes to hear himself argue. I can think of more valid reasons for you two to abstain from a relationship other than just _because_."
"You can?" Meledei's eyebrows arched upward and she leaned forward. "Please, do tell."
She gave a small chuckle. Of course Meledei would be interested. "Well for starters, he's _F'gol_. He bickers and fights about everything. You'll get tired of it eventually."
"Or I'll accept it as part of him and fight back." Meledei grinned. Sorsha was right, F'gol did seem prone to fighting but she also knew that he was getting used to things and they both had a long way to go. Both of them were going to change as the turns passed, but Meledei had already accepted that fact. "What else?"
If she really wanted to know... "Okay, well what about the obvious reasons then. You're a goldrider, you could become Weyrwoman. You don't think that might cause some problems?"
"Why would it?" Meledei had never thought about that. She knew that it was possible she'd become a Weyrwoman eventually, though not guaranteed. Still, she couldn't fathom what sort of problems it would cause between her and F'gol.
"Well besides basic jealousy. How about the fact that he'll have to share you. A Weyrwoman and Weyrleader are a pair, even if they have outside relationships." It was one of the fears Sorsha kept hidden. If Ri'len every became a Weyrleader, she would become the other woman- married or not.
"A pair? A working pair, yes, but nothing beyond that." Would F'gol be jealous? If it ever came to that, she would make sure he didn't need to be. She'd find some way to reassure him.
Sorsha pursed her lips. Meledei could say that now, but Sorsha had heard from the other greenriders how it _really_ was, so she had no illusions. "What about F'gol then. He's a blue rider. You know what that means. What if he decides he likes the boys better one of these days?"
"He doesn't like boys like that." Meledei shook her head. "I mean, I know it's possible to be coupled with one in flights, but that's a flight."
Meledei lived in idealistic world, and that was fine with Sorsha. She'd rather her friend be that way then like Cosani who always saw the worst in things. "Well, if anything were to sabotage you two, I'd still go with my first choice; F'gol being F'gol. But if you don't mind him, who knows, maybe it'll work out for you two. I hope it does."
"We'll work it out if we're committed to doing so." Meledei sounded quite confident and she felt it. If they wanted to stay together, they would and they would work through any difficulties. "Just like you and Ri'len."
"Well good luck then." Sorsha said with a shrug. Ri'len was a much more stable personality than F'gol, but perhaps. "You'd better get going if you want that bath, although I bet F'gol won't bother taking one for you."
Meledei giggled and stretched. "Yeah, I'd better go. I'll see you later, okay?"
Sorsha nodded, "Tomorrow, bright and early. Enjoy your courting!" she added with a tease as Meledei bounced down the hall towards her weyr.
