"How did things go with the weyrlings today?" O'rian asked of the weyrlingstaff assistant as the young man settled further down the long table. "Any dramas?"
"Nothing out of usual," N'mor replied with a shrug and grin.
"Does that mean you're doing your job right then?" For himself O'rian was glad he'd been of an age to go straight to the fighting wings when he had completed his weyrling training instead of being stuck - as N'mor was - as an assistant to the weyrlingstaff.
"'Spose so. We're also kind between clutches. The one we have is nearing graduation and we have no junior weyrlings right now," N'mor said. He still had roughly two months before he would turn sixteen.
"Meledei's crowd? We'll see them Blooding soon, then, will we?" O'rian wasn't sure it was the best introduction to Threadfall for weyrlings, though it hadn't done him any harm. It was a tradition, though, and he suspected that the older riders were clinging to the traditions of the long ago Ninth Pass because they were still shocked to find that there _was_ a Tenth. _His_ generation would be different.
"Yes," N'mor replied, "And then we have more injuries and death," he sighed.
"Not necessarily. Sometimes it goes well, doesn't it? How did you do in yours?"
"I got a score to my upper arm," N'mor replied and twisted to sideways to show the now healed scar.
O'rian smiled and admired the score. "I missed everything during my blooding and since it's mainly been a few light hits on Taoth - which is pretty bad for my nerves but he seems to recover quite quickly." The young bronzerider looked rueful. "I have to remember _not_ to remind him about them after they've healed - and anyway he's so determined to fight Thread he has no real concept of being careful of his own hide."
"So far Keddy has been the luckiest of us two. He hasn't yet gotten a Score at all," N'mor replied.
"Odd, isn't it, that Thread can find the rider when there's all that wing and long dragon body available. Apparently not in Taoth's case, though, but in some, like yours."
"Yes it is," N'mor nodded.
"How long is it until you're in the fighting wings?" O'rian asked. "And do you have a preference for which one?"
"Three more months and I'm sixteen," N'mor replied. "I have no preference, isn't it up to the Weyrleader and wingleaders?" N'mor continued and asked. He had always thought that the rider had no saying with his or her wing-placement.
"It was up to the hatchlings to choose us, but that didn't stop us wishing for one colour or another," O'rian pointed out.
"I just know that Ked was waiting me _here_ while I was originally candidate for Dragonsfalls Weyr," N'mor said with a shrug of his shoulders. "Funny how that one turned out."
"If you'd stayed there, what would Ked have done when he hatched?" O'rian suggested with a little teasing in his tone.
"Died? Or Impressed someone else?" N'mor actually looked horrified by the thought. Neither appealed to him. **What would you have done if I hadn't been here when you hatched?** he asked his lifemate.
}: But you were here, waiting me, :{ the bronze replied with puzzled tone, not really understanding the point of the question.
"Guess the what-if's are beyond draconic abilities," he murmured out aloud.
"Did you ask him?" O'rian laughed. "I asked Taoth, once, why he chose me. He wanted to know if there had been anybody else there."
"Yes, and the answer was as useful as that: you were there," N'mor replied and smiled.
O'rian glanced over the other young dragonrider's shoulder and swallowed his mouthful hurriedly. He glanced behind him and then back. "My Wingleader's waving me over," he said, unable to feel entirely sure it could be nothing wrong. "I'd better see what he wants."
"Don't keep him waiting," N'mor said. "See you around."
