"Men are wherry-brained tunnelsnakes!" Aileyan declared. She was so upset
that she just barged into her friends weyr without checking if she was alone
or even at home first.
"Woah! Slow down!" called Demalia as she emerged from behind the curtain
that separated her sleeping area from the rest of her weyr. Dainty was
squaking and scolding at the surprise entrance. ""Who's done what now?"
"It's Ednan, seems like he has had another sweetheart whole the time,"
Aileyan told her, tears in her eyes.
Demalia digested that information. "He was cheating on you?"
"Or cheated her with me, or both," she fumed. "He lied, that is the point.
He didn't even hint he had someone else, that he wasn't free. I could have
accepted it if he had only _told_ it."
She was about to tell Aileyan where she thought Ednan was keeping his
brains, and from the sound of it it was not his head, more likely some other
part of his anatomy, but that would not be what her friend wanted to hear.
"Men," she settled for saying. "They never think they have to tell you
anything."
"They are wherry-brains," Aileyan agreed.
"If they even have brains at all."
"Or they keep them in their pants," Aileyan said gloomily.
"Did he even apologise?" Demalia suspected not from the way her friend was
talking.
"No. He was running after her and apologizing her," Aileyan fumed. It hurt
to realize he might care of someone else more than he did of her.
"He's not worth it. None of them are." Demalia said. "I think i'm just going
to stick with Tapheth and Dainty for the moment."
"Makes me wonder what else he left unsaid. Maybe he has couple of
coppar-haired little brats running around Dolphin Cove Weyr," Aileyan barely
heard her friends words, so much she was seething. The thought of Ednan's
children filled her with wistful sadness. She would had loved to bear one of
them. Except the healers had told her to have no more children, her pelvis
wasn't large enough, it was too risky. Ravyan was going be to her only one.
"Do you really like him? I mean, really, really like him?"
"Yes," Aileyan admitted with tear chocked voice and burried her face to her
hands.
"Then you need to talk to him, but once you've calmed down. Maybe this other
girl was just a one off thing, if she's holdbred she might think like that
means something." Demalia wasn't born in the weyr, but had lived there long
enough before impressing to understand the attitude to things like sex in a
weyr.
"Well, that might take a while, "Aileyan was so angry and hurt. She was not
going to forgive him soon.
"Don't leave it too long though."
"Month or two would be enough," Aileyan said, and sighed.
"He could decide on the other girl though, you need to know one way or the
other."
"Based on her reaction, she won't be forgiving him any time soon either. She
looked...heart broken," Aileyan felt symphathy for her.
"I don't know what to suggest," said Demalia sympathetically. "Apart from
the fact that a wherry probably has more brains than Ednan."
"Oi, that one was good one, I have to remember it," she said. Aileyan's
anger was draining away and being replaced by kind of tired sadness.
"And a wherry at least has some use, you can eat it."
That made Aileyan giggle.
"See, now you're laughing again." Demalia grinned. "Even if Ednan turns out
to be another no good like so many of the men around here, don't lose the
ability to laugh at them."
Aileyan nodded. "Thank's Demalia," she said, "for listening and being my
friend."
"Anytime, you'd do the same for me."
