D'mal was expecting F'gol. Meledei had sent word that he would be approaching him at some point. When the boy finally arrived, he was surprised to see the young man who had been so sullen on one of his trips to see his daughter at the barracks. So this was the boy who had captured Meledei's heart? Well well. D'mal smiled over at the young man and took a relaxed stance. "May I help you, son?"

"Yes sir, you're D'mal?" F'gol was fairly sure, he looked alot like Meledei, but he wanted to make sure.

"That would be me." The man gave F'gol an easy smile. "Am I in trouble?"

F'gol shook his head, surprised he wasn't feeling more nervous. All he really felt was resolution. This had to be done to move forward. "No, my name is F'gol. I came to talk to you about Meledei."

"My daughter?" D'mal crossed his arms over his chest, his expression becoming more serious. "What about her?"

He wondered if Meledei had mentioned him to her father, but he didn't seem to know about his visit, so perhaps not. "We're weyrlings together, and have become quite close over the last few months."

"Hm." D'mal managed to keep his face quite straight. After a moment, he nodded and stated, "So you're friends."

"She's my best friend." F'gol replied, certainty in his voice. When he continued, he was more subdued, but the resolve was still there. "And I'd like to find out if there could be more. That's why I've come. To seek your permission."

"My permission?" D'mal's jaw set and he reached up to rub his chin. "Well, I must say, most young men wouldn't even bother to ask me for my permission. That's a point in your favor."

F'gol nodded, most young men wouldn't bother; but then again, most young men weren't so stubborn as to think they could hold on to the sort of dreams he was having. "I'm originally from the Harper Hall. It seemed... impolite not to ask."

"And what does Meledei think of this?" D'mal queried, releasing his chin and clasping his hands behind him as he regarded the former harper.

"She supports it." F'gol confirmed. He found himself oddly at ease with the older rider, and was pleased the he was able to stay so composed and focused.

D'mal nodded again. "And what are your intentions toward her? You said you'd like to see if there is more. If there is more, then what?"

Here F'gol faltered slightly. It was the _after_ that was uncertain for him, the part he couldn't quite bring himself to face. "If I were still at the Hall... then of course the end goal would be marriage. This is however, not the Hall."

"Weyrmating then? Perhaps you don't view it as marriage. Most don't, really." D'mal managed to stifle a chuckle at the boy. "Some, however, put as much weight upon it as marriage, it is just as binding. What about you?"

"I... don't know." F'gol replied honestly. It was hard to imagine what people at the Weyr called 'weyrmating' could be anything as binding as a marriage. "The Weyr traditions are still somewhat odd to me. I haven't had much time to understand them all well."

"Keep in mind that the stereotypical Weyr mind set isn't the mindset that _everyone_ has." D'mal paused and looked down at the ground for a moment in thought. "Meledei is one of those. She's quite picky." His gaze lifted to rest upon the younger man. "You must be something to have caught her affection."

F'gol shook his head, he wasn't anyone worth wasting time on, yet he was always amazed when she did. "She keeps telling me that. One of these days though, she'll figure out differently."

D'mal clicked his tongue. "You have my blessing, though I ask that you be gentle and try not to hurt her. Otherwise, I'll have to turn my dragon on you. It won't be pretty."

Though he didn't take the threat seriously, he understood the seriousness of the statement. "I don't _want_ to hurt her." Of course that didn't mean that he wouldn't. He didn't hold out much hope that things would end well... but he had _some_ hope, and for now, that was enough.
