N'vanik

N'vanik
Talryne

Talryne

She looked so peaceful, and so beautiful. N'vanik wanted to crawl into bed beside her and pretend that nothing had ever gone wrong. He was surprised that she had been able to fall asleep. Maybe that was a good sign. Then he saw the wine skin on the night stand. He felt a flash of something -- anger, or worry, or both. But he really couldn't get upset at her for that, could he?

He looked at her for a long moment before deciding to wake her. Leaning over, he brushed a few strands of hair from her face. "Tal. Tal, wake up." His hand moved down to her shoulder and shook her gently. "Wake up."

She stirred and muttered. Then her eyes popped open and she blinked at him. "N'vanik?" With a start, she sat up, clutching the sheets to her.

He said the only words he could. "I'm sorry, Tal. I'm so sorry." His throat tightened.

She'd worried that he would be upset that she was in their bed -- _his_ bed -- that he might be mad enough to throw her out. Talryne hadn't expected this at all. "No, _I'm_ sorry. I'm sorry I got rid of the baby. I didn't know ..."

N'vanik couldn't stand it any more. He climbed onto the bed and pulled her into his arms. She stiffened for a moment, then returned the embrace as he let his tears fall. "It's all my fault. I should've said something. How were you supposed to know if I didn't say anything?"

She clung to him as a wave of relief washed over her. "I thought you wouldn't come back. I thought you didn't want me anymore."

He pulled back and wiped a tear from her face. "I want you. I want you so bad."

There was nothing but honesty in his words, in his eyes. "You're not mad at me?"

"No. I thought because you didn't want the baby, that you didn't really love me." And it hurt. It still hurt, like a knife twisting in his stomach.

Talryne shook her head. "No--"

"I thought you'd only do what I wanted because you need me." He had to say this. He wanted her to understand. "But I think _I_ need _you_."

"What?" She stared up at him.

"My life would fall apart without you." He traced a thumb along her cheek.

She didn't know what to say to that, so she kissed him. She'd needed to hear that without knowing that she did. Talryne laid her head against his chest, listening to his heart. They stayed like that for several minutes, holding each other. Softly, Talryne asked, "So, you want a baby?"

"Not right now ... I don't want to _try_ for one. Please keep taking the tea. But _if_ you get pregnant again, I want you to keep it," he said.

"I never saw you as someone that wanted kids." She realized this was what they should have done before. Talked about it. She shouldn't have assumed.

"I never did, but it's different with you." Everything was different with Talryne. "Do _you_ want kids?"

"I never did. I ... The idea of something being that dependent on me, it's ... it's kind of terrifying," she admitted. It wouldn't be dependent on her for long, though. They could find foster parents. She tried to imagine a little boy or girl, their child. What would having a child be like? "So not right now. But maybe... maybe someday."

He smiled. "Yeah, someday. Someday sounds good." He rubbed her back. It felt so good to hold her, and not to have the fear of her ending another pregnancy weighing down on him. Talryne loved him, he knew that now. She loved him as much as she was able, and that was all he could ask of her. "You've been taking the tea?"

"Every day," she answered.

He brushed her hair aside and bent to kiss along her neck. "Good."

She shivered and felt heat spread low in her belly. "Please," she whispered.

"Are you going to beg for me?" He teased her earlobe.

"Yes." Her shaking hands found his belt. "Please, N'vanik."

One of his hands brushed her thigh. "Keep talking."
