I'll Take It

Writers: Cali, Jane
Date Posted: 27th September 2009

Characters: Trellyn, Leisenn
Description: Trellyn asks for a transfer away from Ednan.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 4, day 18 of Turn 5

"I would like to transfer." Trellyn stated as she stood in the doorway to the Hallmaster's office. She needed to leave the Dolphin Hall and she didn't care where she went.

"Well, come in, Trellyn," Leisenn said, surprised at the bald statement. Clearly there was something that needed a little more than simple agreement from her. "Shut the door behind you, and take a seat."

Trellyn did as instructed, though she felt a little bit trapped with the door closed, and took the offered chair. "Is there any place available?"

"Not really," Leisenn admitted slowly. "Just sent out journeymen on assignments and brought those they replaced home for a while. Do you want to tell me why you'd like to leave?" The old woman smiled, her tone light as she added: "Something we've done? Or not done?"

**Because Ednan is a bastard and I never want to see his face again.** "No, I've just realized I need a change. Kibb is up for it too. He likes to meet new dolphins and people. Teaching just isn't as interesting for him."

"But you're not long back from a fairly long stint working on the Topaz SeaHold reconstruction, I believe. Did you enjoy it there? Or did you want a change from there, too?"

Trellyn had left to go to Topaz, mostly because of Ednan, trying to get some space. She'd come back because of him too when she'd realized that she couldn't stand to be away from him and distance hadn't made her forget him. Would going back help her now when it hadn't before? "If it's all that's available, then I'll take it."

"Ahh. It's not, really. The new crew just went up there. How far away do you want to go? Are you considering a transfer to a new Hall? Up north, perhaps?" For the Southern Halls wouldn't accept her with the craft ban still in force.

"Well I don't know about going up North." Trellyn was a Southern gal. She'd never even been up there for a visit before. "Isn't there _anything_ down here?"

Leisenn nodded slowly. "There _is_ but it depends a little on why you want to move. If what you and Kibb want is a change this might not work out."

Trellyn was annoyed. She wanted to be away from Ednan, if she had to go North, then fine, but surely there had to be some position that didn't force her to move continents! "Well what is it? Like I said, it's the teaching that seems to be monotonous. Any little hold will do."

"It's not a Hold at all, little or big. But the Weyr." Leisenn had the grace to look a little apologetic. "Next door."

The journeywoman paused as she put together what the Hallmaster was offering. The Weyr had been without a dolphineer since the hurricane that had taken Parvey's life. They'd been rotating among all the journeymen and even the Masters to man the post since it was only a half hour's walk away. She'd thought Leisenn had been happy with the arrangement, but perhaps not. "The dock post? Full time?"

Leisenn nodded. "It's all I have to offer."

It was something she supposed. It would get her away from the Hall except when she needed to come back to sleep, and even then, she could always sleep in the cot on the dock if there was a storm or something. Surely she wouldn't run into Ednan but very rarely. It would work for now, until something else came open. "I'll take it then."

"Really?" Leisenn's was both pleased and surprised. It was a useful first step for somebody who might later become the dock master at the Dolphin Hall, and there seemed no harm in considering that as a possible future for the journeywoman - if she got over her restlessness. "I'll have the Hallsecond change the rosters and arrange for you to take over the job at the start of next sevenday."

She could last a few more days at the Hall. She'd just stay in her quarters as much as possible, surely it wouldn't be too difficult to avoid Ednan then. "Thank you Leisenn."

"And if you care to, there is an offer of living at the Weyr. It goes with the appointment," she added neutrally, since she didn't have enough information about _why_ Trellyn wanted to move away to know if that would make things better or worse.

Although the Weyr and Dolphin Hall were close enough for the two populations to mix socially there didn't appear to be much mingling except along family lines. But appearances could be deceptive, no matter how sharp the Hallmaster's eyes still were.

"I think I'd like to try it there." She wasn't sure if she'd like living at the Weyr, it always seemed busy, never a quiet time. It had to be better than running into Ednan in the Journeyman wing. "I could use the space."

"All right. As I said, we would start the appointment from the first day next sevenday. Let the Headwoman and Hallsecond know if you take up the accommodation at the Weyr, and I'll pop along to hear your reports every other sevenday unless you have something I need to know in between, in which case you can come down here."

Trellyn thought that she'd have to return to the Hall to give her reports, but if Leisenn was going to come to _her_ even better. "I will. I'll stay in touch." she promised.

The journeywoman's obvious pleasure at the arrangement was suggestive enough of her reasons for wanting to get away from the Hall, but Leisenn supposed she didn't need to know every detail of the lives of those in the Hall. "I'll make up the paperwork and advice the Weyr. You start making whatever arrangements you need to as soon as you've arranged with the Hallsecond to have your current duties transferred."

The old woman got to her feet and extended her hand across to the younger one. "Congratulations on your new appointment, Trellyn."
