Comes before the first jump /between/.

"Thanks for coming with me!" the weyrling said brightly, fairly skipping
down the corridor in her excitement.

Arrilon just rolled his eyes. She had nagged him for almost a candlemark
and he had finally agreed just to shut her up.

"I hope I can find some rugs, and maybe a chair. Or, how about a
tapestry?!" Kamalia spoke non-stop on their way to the storerooms, excited
at the prospect of brightening up her weyr. She had been living there for
some time, but had been too busy with weyrling training to take the time
to make the place her own. Now, with a free day, she was determined to
find something in the storerooms, and equally as determined for her
brother to help her.

"Here's the room!" Kamalia finally said and Arrilon sighed in relief. He
hoped this would not take too long.

The siblings stepped into the large room, filled with a variety of
furnishings of all sizes. Arrilon couldn't help but think morbidly that most
of the items probably belonged to dragonriders who died in Threadfall.

Kamalia, however, had no such thought. She immediately began walking,
hands touching desks, chairs, and, "Ooh! Isn't it pretty?" She pointed to a
small wood table.

"It's a table," Arrilon said, eyes scanning the room. "Look, there's a pile
of rugs." Maybe she could look through them and be done with it.

However, Kamalia was enjoying looking at every single object in the
room. "Look at this chair! It's very big though, and I don't think it would
fit in my room. Maybe when you Impress a bronze and have a huge weyr,
you can take it."

"Right," Arrilon said, sarcastically.

"Aren't you excited? There will be another Hatching soon. Then you'll
Impress and it'll be the start of a whole new life."

"Maybe." He desperately hoped for Impression, but every time he was
left Standing made him more pessimistic about his prospects. Now his
sister was almost a senior weyrling while his life was still the same.

"How about this desk? Isn't it nice?"

Arrilon came closer to look at it. "What do you need a desk for?"

"Well, to write to family."

"You haven't written more than once since you came here."

"Well, maybe I'll start. Or, I can just go visit them soon."

Arrilon became serious. "Aren't you scared?"

"What?" Kamalia turned towards him.

"You'll be learning to go /between/ soon. Weyrlings _die_ at this point in
training. I mean, I know you'll be fine. But what about everyone else?"

"Ari, are you always thinking of death?" Kamalia's became serious
for the first time that afternoon. "Besides, I can't do anything to help
other people in my class. I can just do my very best. If I die, then I won't
need to worry about it anymore."

Arrilon shuddered at her casual attitude towards death.

"Maybe I'll come back for the desk later. Let's look at the rugs you saw,"
Kamalia said, a smile back on her face.

"What kind of rug are you looking for?"

"Something green, maybe with a green dragon on it." Kamalia began
leafing through one stack of rugs while Arrilon looked at another.

"I thought your favorite color was blue."

"Well, it was. But now that I have Alaudath I see how beautiful green is.
And it comes in so many different shades. You'll see. Your favorite color
will become bronze."

Arrilon ignored her, concentrating instead on the rugs. The more he
thought about the next Hatching, the more anxious he felt.

"Ooh!"

Kamalia's shriek jerked him out of his thoughts. "Did you find a
tunnelsnake?" he asked sarcastically, annoyed.

"No! Look!" She carefully pulled a rug out from the pile and held it up.
The rug was Turns old, the greens and blues of the depiction having faded
almost to a grey. What appeared to be a green dragon was in the center of
the rug, surrounded by blue sky and the ground far below. "Isn't it
beautiful? The dragon is a very light green, like Alaudath."

"You can barely tell that it's a green dragon," Arrilon retorted. "That rug
was probably sitting in a weyr, untouched, for fifty Turns. The cleaning
staff were just too lazy to throw it out."

"I love it," Kamalia said, unfazed. "I'm going to put it right next to my
bed, so I can see it every day. You know, you're no fun at all. Lighten
up."

"Are you done yet?"

Kamalia sighed. "Yes. Next time, I'll come with Isele. She knows how
to enjoy herself."

"That sounds like a great idea. Can I go practice now?"

"Don't you want to come up to my weyr to see how it will look with my
new rug?"

"No." All he wanted to do was go somewhere quiet, where his sister
couldn't nag or prod him.

"Fine." Kamalia carefully rolled the rug up and tucked it under her arm.
She gave her brother a quick hug. "You can go practice."

"Thank you for your permission, oh greenrider." Arrilon took a small
bow.

Kamalia rolled her eyes as her brother turned and left the room. Hopefully
Impressing a dragon would teach him to be more than just serious or
sarcastic.

Turning her attention back to the task at hand, she strode purposefully out
of the storeroom. **Ally! I found the perfect rug for our weyr. The
dragon looks like you!**
