Teseada

Teseada

"Teseada. Good Morning." Tatitem greeted the goldrider as she entered the
Weyrwoman Second's office. After months of shoving down the unease, it
finally no longer seemed odd to find the girl occupying such a lofty
position, although she doubted she would ever be comfortable with the idea.
Teseada was only Susha's age.

"And to you," Teseada smiled as she returned the greeting. "Sit down, take
the weight off your feet for a minute or two. I just need to check this hide
through one more time, and then I'm all yours."

"An excellent idea." Tatitem agreed. Chances to sit down didn't come by very
often in her work unless she was in her office, and were not to be
squandered as her knees started to inform her that she was no longer young.

And it wasn't long before the figures were tallied and the hide initialed
to be put in the records room. "I'm done now," Teseada told the Headwoman.

"Good." Tatitem said briskly, resisting the urge to reach over and check the
young woman's work even as she felt a small surge of pride that Teseada had
reached the point where she no longer needed her to do so regularly. She
laid the small pile of hides that had been sitting in her lap on the
Weyrwoman Second's desk. "The storeroom reports and the inventory from the
last tithe." She announced. "And a possible menu for the next Hatching,
assuming a hunting party or two can find some decent wherries."

The first two hides were set aside in favour of looking at the menu. "Hmm,
sounds good," the goldrider said after a moment or two. "I'm sure we can
get the hunting parties to look for some, maybe if we get them in enough
time we could have one or two smoked?"

"Only if they're good sized ones." Tatitem warned, making a mental note of
the preference for future reference. "The smaller ones are tougher and taste
strange when you smoke them."

"I'm sure we can get some biggish ones, even if I have to send Onnyth out
myself!" Teseada was joking, it would rarely be her job to hunt, even though
she had enjoyed the few times she'd gone out as a weyrling.

Tatitem smiled at the young goldrider's enthusiasm. "I doubt that will be
necessary, but I'm sure if you dropped a hint of two to the bronzeriders
we'd have plenty to choose from. Of course, I'd have to change the menu
again to accomodate all that extra wherry." Tati added dryly.

"Another time then," Teseada looked futher down the menu. "I like the choice
of wines you've listed there."

"I'll tell Viri you approved." Tatitem nodded with a small smile. "I ran a
little short on time, so I asked an old vinter friend of mine to give some
suggestions once I drew up the menu."

"I'm sure the Vintner Hall wouldn't let us down anyway."

"They know better. Besides, we've Searched so many from the Vinter's Hall
over the turns that I find it useful to have one of the journeymen review my
wine choices for formal occasions anyway." Tati said briskly.

"And I have no doubts that this menu would impress our guests. It looks
really good."

Tatitem allowed herself a slight smile at the compliment. "I hope the guests
agree with you." She said simply.

"I'm sure they will. And with there being a new lord Holder at Amber Hills,
we need to put our best side forward."

"Of course." Tati said briskly. "I have no intention to jeopardize the
Weyr's relationship with the Hold. And you can rest assured that any
troublemakers will be kept _far_ away from the Festivities." She stressed, a
hint of acid in her tone as she entertained a brief but reassuring vision of
several particularly troublesome individuals mucking out the beast pens.

"Why am I imagining sparkling porcine pens?" said Teseada with a grin.

"I haven't the faintest idea." Tatitem said calmly, but she didn't fight the
satisfied smile tugging at her lips. Teseada had grown up at Dragonsfall,
and Tati had been on the headwoman's staff long enough for most of the weyr
residents to be familiar with her preferred forms of character building.

"I'll get right onto the rest of these now," Teseada said reaching out for
the other pile. "If only people knew what went along with these knots..."

"They would still want them, because nobody wants to think about the actual
work that comes with a dragon, no matter what the color." Tatitem said dryly
as she stood. "Or the work that goes into keeping a weyr running."

"Well I'd not change them for anything now, but there are times I wish all
this," and she gestured to the hides. "that this was split between three and
not two."

"I'm sure eventually Onnyth or Riyanth will take care of that for you, and
then you'll be wishing for a fourth."

"I'm sure they will," Teseada smiled. "One day soon."

"Hopefully." Tatitem agreed. "Is there anything else?"

Teseada shook her head. "This pile isn't getting any smaller."

"Neither is the one in my office." Tatitem sighed. "Let me know if you need
anything else Teseada. I should be in the Lower Caverns for the rest of the
day, barring disasters."

"I'll come and find you if I do need anything."
