"Vanik, Vanik!"
N'vanik glared up at his dragon. "Look what you've done. Now they know my name!"
}:You told them. It's not my fault.:{ The bronze used the tip of his tail to tickle a dolphin's belly.
"You dragged me out here." N'vanik lifted a hand to rub a young female's head.
}:There was no dragging. I asked.:{ Then he added smugly, }:I know you're happy. Silly rider.:{
N'vanik splashed Loseth, although the bronze barely noticed. All it did was excite the dolphins, who started splashing both rider and dragon.
Ayana paused on the shore looking at the large dragon in the water, his rider and a number of dolphins small figures around him. Even though the Hall was near the Weyr, not many dragonriders came to visit, and still fewer bronzes. She had been planning to go for a swim, but talking to a cute bronzerider would be much more fun. If he wasn't cute, she could just make an excuse and leave. She quickly entered the water, sure strokes taking her towards the dragonrider and his bronze.
Some of the dolphins got distracted at her approach, and that caught N'vanik's attention. "Hello, there."
"Hello," the Journeyman replied, a smile spreading across her face. He was definitely worth missing a swim for. His jawline, his eyes, the glimpse of his shoulders, even the threadscore on his cheek all contributed to her heartbeat quickening. "What brings you near the Hall, bronzerider? Were you looking to have some fun?"
"My dragon wanted to play with the dolphins, and he dragged me along." A dolphin pushed under his hand and he absently rubbed it. "You a dolphineer?"
"Yes." She tread water easily. "And, you're from the Weyr here, or another one?" He could be from anywhere on Pern.
"Here." He smiled. "I'm the Weyrleader."
"Oh!" That was a complete surprise. She hadn't imagined the Weyrleader would be so handsome. His rank just made him more attractive. "Is this your first time at the Hall? Because, if you need a tour, or anything..."
"Tours can wait for another time." Tours were boring. Besides, the water was nice. "Any of these overgrown fish friends of yours?"
"Not fish!" One of the dolphins protested. "Maaammals!"
"I know, I was teasing." He looked at the dolphineer. "They understand teasing, don't they?"
"Some do, some don't. People calling them fish can be a bit of a sore spot though." She gestured for the affronted dolphin to come to her and rubbed her lovingly. "This is Selin. She's one of the more senior members of the pod."
"Offending the rankers." He chuckled. "I've got a habit of that."
"Hmm." That was unexpected, and a bit confusing. "But now, you lead the Weyr." The sentence was almost said as a question.
"That just means I can get away with it now." He winked.
A light blush spread across the dolphineer's cheeks. "And, what else does the Weyrleader do for fun?" Just maybe, it could be something they could enjoy together.
He chuckled, wondering if that blush was going to get worse. "I have a lot of sex."
"Well, I expected that. You are a bronzerider." Ayana tried to keep her tone light, but the blush continued to give her away.
"Those two things don't always go together." He shook a finger at her. "Nasty stereotypes."
"Well, I was right this time around. But, don't think everyone at the Hall is celibate until marriage." The proximity to the Weyr made it easier to break that stereotype.
"I don't. I've experienced otherwise, just not at this Hall." A dolphin nudged against him, hard enough to make him stumble. He gave a short, surprised laugh and patted the dolphin. They must not like being ignored.
"Well..." she almost got the courage to make a pass at him, but could not make the words come out of her mouth. The dolphin audience made it even more difficult. "If you hang around here long enough you might have an experience or two," she managed to say.
"I thought I might be lucky enough to have one today." He gave her a curious glance before turning back to the dolphins.
Ayana involuntarily reached out and touched his shoulder. If she had been a forward woman, she could have skipped all of the pleasantries and gone right to sex. Now she had a bronzerider, and not just that but a Weyrleader, disappointed in her. How could she have known that was what he expected? She had just planned for some innocent flirtation before commencing her swim.
"I would ask, 'Your place or mine?' but I don't think Hall residents, would be too pleased," she said lightly, trying not to let any hesitation creep into her voice. There, she had made an offer. She wasn't sure if it would be more nerve-wracking if he accepted or if he did not.
He chuckled. "Probably not. I wouldn't want the Weyrwoman lecturing me on endangering Hall relations." A lecture from Trae was just about the last thing he needed. He considered turning the dolphineer down. He almost never took a woman to his own bed now. It felt like intruding on something that belonged to him and Tal. Shards, just thinking about her brought the pain back. N'vanik tilted his head. "You ever seen a Weyrleader's weyr before?"
A laugh escaped Ayana's lips. "No, I haven't. You are the first Weyrleader I've ever even talked to." He had not rejected her. She was going to sleep with the Weyrleader, in his weyr.
"Lots of firsts going on today." N'vanik smiled. "Would you like to go now?"
"Yes," she replied quickly. The dolphins were playing amongst themselves, having become bored with their conversation. Ayana hoped they were not listening to their talk at all. The sooner they got out of earshot the safer she would feel.
Loseth was reluctant to leave the water and the entertaining dolphins, but N'vanik promised him that he could come back as soon as he dropped them off at their weyr. "Ever rode a bronze before?" N'vanik asked Ayana.
She shook her head, trying to mask her awe as they reached the shore and the huge bronze came closer.
"Loseth will give you a smooth ride ... and so will I," he said.
One advantage of Loseth's bulk was that he blocked the dolphins' view. Encouraged by this, and relived this would not be her first time with a dragonrider, Ayana pressed herself against the Weyrleader, arms wrapping around his neck. "It doesn't need to be smooth if you don't want it to be," she murmured.
"Maybe I don't," he murmured back.
