Description: Morasva and L'ayn run into K'deren in the dining hall.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 3, day 13 of Turn 5
Morasva and L'ayn came into the dining hall around midday to get their main meals for the day. Just as the two were about to sit down, Morasva noticed K'deren across at a different table. "Come on," she said to her weyrmate, "it's K'sedel's boy." She picked up her own plate and all but dragging L'ayn up from the table, made her way to K'deren. Just as she sat down, L'ayn came up behind her with his own plate and sat. "Hello there K'deren," she said as she made herself comfortable. "How are things going with you? And your family at River Bluff?"
"I'm fine, the children are with their foster parents for now," replied the brownrider. "And I suspect my brothers are driving each other and my father nuts. R'sedel and K'reyel never really got on." He gestured to a couple of empty seats. "Join me?" he asked politely.
Morasva and L'ayn sat on the seats he indicated and then Morasva started to talk. "Well fostering really is the best way, especially with thread and everything. L'ayn and I could sort of be part-time parents, but there's no way we could really do that now," she said looking at L'ayn, who nodded. "I never did quite understand why your brothers followed K'sedel to River Bluff." At this L'ayn turned to Morasva and said, "Now you and I both know K'reydel left as K'sedel's second." Morasva nodded at this, "True," she said then turned back to K'deren. "So we understand why K'reydel left, but I still don't get why R'sedel would go there. Even we know that the two of them never really got along. And you're poor father."
"No matter what, R'sedel and his green make a superb search pair. Father invited him there when he was Weyrleader, and when Tabarnith chose K'reyel's dragon, well he was well established in his wing by then." K'deren grinned. "At least I don't have to put up with them fighting any more, they had some real scraps as children."
"So true about R'sedel and his dragon as a great search pair. We were sad to see those ones go, weren't we," Morasva said to L'ayn. He was in the middle of chewing and so just nodded, which was just as well. Morasva spoke again to K'deren. "Well then, back to those children of yours. When did that happen, then?"
"Well you know what happens when dragons rise," K'deren grinned, his two eldest resulted that way. "Both Rondera and Kedon are living examples of what can happen. Trievan, well he's Vonalie's boy and Deralie she's ours. Those two miss their mother." Nobody ever said that the children of riders had it easy, some lost one or both parents, others saw them maimed in some way.
Morasva and L'ayn both chuckled at the comment about dragons rising. Most of their children had been products of a Flight. When he began talking about what had happened to Vonalie, Morasva reached a hand toward K'deren's. "Oh honey..." she said not quite knowing the best way to respond. She and L'ayn had both been so lucky that neither of them had been in an accident.
"She'd want me to carry on with life, for their sake." the unspoken words were that it would be for him too, she'd not want him to be alone forever.
Morasva nodded. "Now that is the truth of it. It's always best to keep on living," she said knowingly. That had been what she and L'ayn had to do after their children died. It was what everyone had to do, especially dragonriders and especially now.
"Always," replied K'deren.
Morasva patted K'deren's hand for a moment more, taking a deep breath. Deciding to discuss something much happier, she said, "Well L'ayn and I have just found out we're great-grandparents again. One of Mynaayn's children just had a daughter. Can't for the life of me remember the baby's name." L'ayn had anticipated Morasva forgetting the name and so was ready to add, "Yiana," once Morasva had stopped speaking. "Right yes," Morasva continued, "that's it."
"That's a pretty name."
"Yes it really is," Morasva said. "And if they've any sense at all it's a combination of the mother and father's name, as is proper," she continued.
"So she'll always know where she came from."
"Exactly so," she said quietly. She looked over and saw that L'ayn had all but finished his plate of food and chuckled. "Looks like I should quit chattering and get to eating. We'll let you get going. I'm sure you've more important things to do than sit and talk to us."
"There are some hides that I need to look at before the end of the day," said the Wingsecond. "New drill formations."
Morasva quickly finished her plate of food and then she and L'ayn stood. "Good luck with those drill formations," she said as the two of them left.
