The Klah Technique

Writers: AL, Heather N
Date Posted: 29th May 2009

Characters: Meledei, Morasva
Description: Morasva uses klah to check up on the gold weyrling, Meledei.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 28 of Turn 5

Meledei checked the leather and frowned at the weakness she found. "Well that's no good." She muttered to herself as she ran her thumb over the spot. She wouldn't just throw it away. It wouldn't do any good for making straps but it could be cut up and used for something else. There was no point in wasting it. Meledei set aside that bit of leather and took another. Much better.

Morasva made her way to the Weyrling barracks with two mugs of klah in hand. She'd found that bringing enough food or drink for along for two people when checking up on someone was always helpful. It was a great way in. Plus it often made the other person feel like they had to sit and chat for at least as long as it took to finish the food. It had always worked with her children and she figured it would work with Meledei too. Holding both mugs in one hand, Morasva stood just inside the girls' sleeping area in the barracks and said, "Hello Meledei. It's Morasva. I've brought klah."

Meledei looked up from where she had been looking over the notes she had taken. She was paying particular attention to the various formations, especially the ones they would be doing over the next few days. A smile crept over her lips as she saw Morasva with two mugs of klah and she stood in greeting. "Hello Morasva." Her eyes dropped to eye the klah. "Do I dare assume that one of those is for me?"

Morasva came further into the room and handed a mug to Meledei. "Why of course one of them is for you. Poor L'ayn saw me with them when I was on my way here and thought one was for him. But don't you worry, I set him right, the silly old man. Told him he could get his own klah." She smiled looked around for a seat and found only the one Meledei had been using. "Mind if I sit on your bed? You'd be surprised at how tired just standing can make you some days."

"Of course not." Meledei cradled her mug with one hand then motioned to her bed with the other. "I must say, I feel sorry for L'ayn now." The weyrling lowered herself back into the chair and sipped at her klah, enjoying its flavour as it trickled down her throat.

Morasva sat down and sipped at her klah. "Oh don't you go worrying about L'ayn. He can take care of himself." She sat for a moment without speaking, just sipping, waiting to see where Meledei would more the conversation.

"I thought men were hopeless without their women?" Meledei grinned just before drinking a little of her own klah. "Not that I can really speak from experience, mind you."

Morasva chuckled, nodding. "Oh some men are, most men really. But I've rubbed off on L'ayn enough that he's at least mostly self-sufficient." She gave a little chuckle again, "Well self-sufficient enough to get his own klah." She let her chuckle turn into a smile and then set her mug into her lap. "You're not worried about that, are you? I mean, not having much experience when your Elleth has her first mating flight? I'll discuss this in a weyrling class, but still...you have had some experience before, yes?"

"Well, I can't say that's not a concern." Meledei fingered the rim of her mug and shrugged. "No, I haven't had any experience. I've never even kissed a guy." A rueful grin spread over her lips. "I know, odd for a weyrbred."

Morasva looked at the girl with kind eyes and a soft smile. "Odd, yes. But not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes weyrbred children start so young, there's no mystery left by the time they get older. I should know." She sipped again at her klah, waiting for a bit before talking again. "But now you should definitely get some experience as soon as you are allowed. You don't want your first time to be during a flight. The first flight is rough enough without it also being your first time having sex at all."

"I know." Meledei nodded slowly. She'd heard plenty about how flights worked and most of the girl friends who had impressed were glad they had experience before the flight. One or two had said it probably wouldn't had mattered - they had been so caught up in their dragon's lust they didn't really register what they were doing or what was happening to them. "It's just...hard when you don't have someone special. I'm not really into sex for simply the sake of it." Well, that wasn't the whole truth. There was someone in her life, but F'gol hadn't shown any interest in her beyond friendship.

Morasva nodded, saying, "Yes that can be hard, so I've heard." She giggled lightly, "I was really quite a green in my youth." She sighed remembering, then turned back to the present conversation. "Well you could be alright without giving it a go before your first flight. But at the very least you'd be quite sore." She paused, sipping. "Men aren't always gentle anyway," she said with a wink.

"I've heard." Meledei wrinkled her face. That was another thing, she wanted to be with someone who would be gentle. Yes, she'd have to figure out what to do before Elleth rose. "But we still have some time before she rises. I have to get through training first."

Morasva brightened, satisfied to change the topic. "That you do, that you do. There is certainly no rush." She gulped her klah, now that it was cool enough to do so. "So then, how has training been so far? What you expected?"

"Yes and no." Meledei turned her mug in her hands before mimicking Morasva and taking a sip of her own. "I sort of knew what to expect thanks to my father, but it's not the same as actually going through things."

Morasva laughed lightly, "Oh that is so true." She finished her klah and then said, "Especially now with thread. Your own training is probably quite different from your fathers, or mine." After a pause she added, "And do you have any concerns or problems that your training hasn't answered yet?"

"Not right now." Meledei never hesitated to ask when she did have questions, though. "Though I'm sure I'll think of some later."

"Well when you think of one you feel free to ask me," Morasva said. "Though I know you'd have asked even if I hadn't said that," Morasva added with a wink. Then in a moment of being straightforward Morasva said, "I just wanted to make sure everything was all right, make sure you didn't have any problems you hadn't wanted to go to the Weyrlingmaster with."

Meledei smiled at the greenrider. "I appreciate it, Morasva, I really do. It's good of you to check up on me."

Morasva nodded and stood. "Well I'm glad some one appreciates it," she said with a light chuckle. Not everyone she'd been checking on had been so easy to talk to. "I've certainly enjoyed the visit, my dear," she added.

"I have as well." The weyrling downed the last of her klah then offered the mug back to Morasva. "Thanks for the company, and for the klah."

Morasva took the mug saying, "Thank you for the company." With a nod of her head she left the goldrider.
