Wingleader and Wingthird

Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 11 of Turn 5

B'vin was sure that this had to be the most boring day of his life. He hovered on Serenth's back as he watched his new wing practice their formation dives _again_. At least with the weyrlings, he'd been able to yell at them when they did something wrong. Here, he just had to watch while the Wingleader or his second got the honor. Serenth passed the announcement of their break for lunch and B'vin groaned. It'd only been half the day. Resigned, he had Serenth join up with the group as they landed in the bowl.

D'ren slid off Menanth's neck and hesitated. Well, he should say _something_. He walked over to B'vin and put on what he hoped was a friendly smile. "So, you're in Cyclone?"

"Yeah, I got cleared by the healers finally." B'vin said nervously. When D'ren won his last flight, B'vin had been expecting the worst, just like with all the other riders who'd won his previous flights; but D'ren hadn't acted like there was something wrong with him, and if he'd felt it he'd kept it to himself. It had been the first time that B'vin hadn't spent the evening after a flight curled up on the floor vomiting and crying. Still, the bronzerider could have changed his mind on the matter after all the flightlust had worn off. "It's not a problem is it?"

"Problem?" D'ren frowned. "No, it's not a problem."

B'vin gave a silent relieved sigh, he'd been half expecting some sort of hateful comment or barbed insult. "Good."

The problem was, he kept thinking of the flight, waking up next to B'vin. "That means you're healed, right?"

The greenrider gave a double stomp of his leg to show it's sturdiness. "Yes, fully functional and strong. I won't disappoint."

"That's good." Something like a real smile crossed D'ren's face. "Are you glad to be back in the Wings?"

His sigh of relief was audible this time. "Most definitely. I thought I'd never be rid of all those brats. I mean, most of the older ones were okay, but the younger ones..."

D'ren gave a little chuckle. Your perspective on weyrlings changed fast once you were out of weyrlinghood yourself. "Why were you in the weyrling wing so long? You weren't hurt that whole time, were you?"

"No." B'vin growled, "I think J'darin had a grudge against me or something. I asked repeatedly for a new assignment but he wanted me to stay with the weyrlings."

"J'darin." D'ren's voice was almost an echo of B'vin's growl. "I'm glad he's not Weyrleader anymore."

B'vin mouth curled into a smile. D'ren could be okay when he wasn't all mushy faced with Dysali or sulking in a corner. "Me too. Hopefully when he comes back to a wing they won't stick him here with us."

"He won't be able to boss us around either way." The longer he talked with B'vin, the easier it got. "Maybe someday, we'll get to boss _him_ around."

"He might not be able to boss _you_ around." B'vin flicked the bronzerider's knots, "But _me_, he'll always try."

"You could end up a Wingthird, and then you would be able to boss him around," D'ren pointed out.

B'vin gave a bark of laughter. "My first day with the wing and you're already promoting me? I'll tell you what, some day when you're a Wingleader, I'll be your Wingthird."

"Deal!" D'ren smiled.

B'vin looked over and saw that most of the wing was already leaving the weyr bowl and heading towards the dining cavern. "How long does he give us to eat?"

D'ren shrugged. "Enough. We should go before the line gets too long."

He nodded and followed the bronzerider in. Another half day of boring observation and then he'd be able to participate in the formations come morning. He'd work hard, and so would Serenth. They'd fly against Thread and they'd survive, maybe even long enough to take up D'ren on his promise of Wingthird.
