A Bubbly for You

Writers: Ainsley, AL
Date Posted: 17th March 2009

Characters: Meledei, Afkica
Description: Meledei receives yet another mysterious gift from her admirer.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 1 of Turn 5

Afkica walked into the barracks holding a nice, warm not to mention wonderfully aromatic bubbly pie and headed straight for Meledei. "I could really learn to dislike you if this keeps up. I was just a little tempted to eat this myself," she stated with a grin, holding the pie out to Meledei.

"Huh?" Meledei looked up from where she had been looking over what they had learned for the day. She had marked off the lessons on the chart, took note of the questions asked and was making sure she understood everything they were teaching. Glancing to the side, she took note that there was only about a half hour before lights out. Well, that was when she wanted to stop anyway - she did want to have _some_ free time that wasn't taken up with studying. Her attention was brought back to the pie and Meledei's eyes lit up as she smiled. "Oh Afkica, this is for me? Thanks! You're very sweet!"

"Why, thank you, yes I am," the dark-skinned girl said with a grin, "But alas, all I did was carry this from the entrance of the barracks to here. A drudge asked if I might deliver it. She seemed quite perturbed to be sent _all the way_," here Afkica offered her friend an eye roll, "To the weyerling barracks with it. And before you ask, I did ask her about who sent it. She gave me this note, but she said that one of the cooks told her to deliver it."

Meledei wrinkled her nose in frustration. No one ever seemed to know who really sent her the gifts! Not even those who delivered them! She opened the note and read it.

_May this offer you the warmth and comfort that you do to others._

"It's very sweet." Meledei stated, obviously not meaning the bubbly though she took the pie from Afkica. "I wish I knew who was doing this. Maybe it was the cook who sent it."

"Welllll, I did inquire, as I'm apt to be kind of curious. The cook is relatively young, under twenty, and _she_ is kind of seeing a guy. Not that it's impossible....but it doesn't seem likely."

"Then I would say probably not." Meledei sighed, then took a bite of the bubbly. It had cooled down to where it was just right for eating and fairly melted in her mouth. The weyrling savoured the taste for some time before finally swallowing. "Did you get her name? Maybe I should ask who asked her.."

"The cook? Windraya. Apparently she grew up in the Weyr, has more siblings than one can count, and is currently spending a great deal of time with a journeyman Tanner." Afkica had done her job as investigator hoping to help her friend with this ongoing mystery.

"Wow..." Meledei was impressed with the amount of information that Afkica had gleaned. "For that I think I should give you half of this bubbly."

"You'd get no complaints from me!"

"Alas, I haven't a knife." The bubbly was fairly dripping as it was and Meledei was certain that pulling it apart would merely result in a rather sticky mess. "Here, you can take bites from the other end. So...no thoughts on who this could be?"

"Just one bite," Afkica replied, knowing she really shouldn't be sharing Meledei's treat at all, but it smelled soooo good. Licking her lips after sampling the pie, Afkica finished chewing with a thoughtful look. "I would definitely say that the cook knows something. I mean, most likely she had something to do with the delivery in the dining cavern as well. She has lots of siblings, perhaps she's related to this guy."

"That's a thought." And a good one. Afkica had certainly done her work. Meledei actually felt a little ashamed that she hadn't done more or tried harder. Well, she _had_ been working and studying, but that didn't mean she couldn't have taken _some_ time to look into it. "You're putting me to shame."

"Are you kidding? This is great fun! More fun than all that studying you are so diligent about," Afkica tended to do enough to get by when it came to studying, though she spent a great deal of effort on anything hands on and active. "Not that it won't pay off for you, but it's just hard for me to stay still and focused on hides."

"It's more of preparation for the future than anything, I guess." Meledei admitted with a half grin. "After all, I'm a goldrider now. I have to get used to working on the hides.." Still, that didn't mean her nose had to be in them all the time. There was something to be said for taking a break now and then. "And I'm done with them for the night, so for now, I'm going to enjoy this bubbly with the time that's left and then I'm going to enjoy a nice, long sleep because tomorrow is going to come really early."
