Boring Charts

Writers: AL, Cali
Date Posted: 3rd March 2009

Characters: F'gol, Meledei
Description: F'gol finds Meledei making a chart.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 6 of Turn 5

Meledei glanced at the information that G'len had given her, then looked at the large parchment she had gotten her father to procure for her. She had a pen and ink ready, but she didn't dip the pen just yet. Instead, she traced through the air the letters in order over the parchment to get an idea of the size before putting them down permanently. Once she had the idea, she finally dipped the pen and began to write. Her lettering was neat and curvy, ink gliding easily over the parchment and etching its mark. She got the first line done and admired it before dipping the pen once more.

"Whatcha doing?" F'gol leaned curiously over the girl's shoulder at the large sheet. They didn't have much free time allotted to them and he knew that _he_ wouldn't want to spend it hunched over a table writing... unless it was composing of course.

"Making a chart." Meledei let her hand whisk over the parchment, finishing the second set of lines, then re-dipped before she began the third. At the end of each of the lines of words, she added an empty line, space for something to be filled in later. "For us, so we can see our progress and how far we have to go."

"Hmmm," he mused, losing interest by the second. "Sounds boring. Why'd you get assigned to do it? Are they prepping you for the hours and hours you'll have to spend in the records room?"

"I didn't get assigned to do it." Meledei commented as she cast a glance at the bluerider. "I actually asked to do it. I'm doing it so we have a better idea of what we'll be doing and how far we've gotten. Something visual we can look at instead of wondering. And, this part," She pointed to the empty lines she had drawn after each event, "Is where we can write down questions or concerns so we don't forget to ask them."

"Hmmm," F'gol said again, thinking Meledei must be one of those organizing types. "Sounds useful I guess. I was gonna go and get some fruitjuice, you want some?"

"Sure, I'd love some." They only had about an hour of free time and if he got her something, she wouldn't have to stop what she was doing to get something for herself. "Thank you for offering."

F'gol was back fairly quickly, Meledei's mug in hand, and looking over her shouldn't once again. "Here you go, you're not done yet?"

"This is going to take a while." Meledei paused long enough to take the mug from F'gol's hand. She gave him a soft 'thanks' then sipped at it. "There will be six charts, one for each month of training. This is the first chart. I'm about...halfway done with this one."

He saw her write 'Weyr Sexuality' and he crinkled his nose. He wasn't looking forward to that one, but it was probably one that he needed to pay attention in. "What's Dragonrider Etiquette?"

"I think it generally is how you deal with others as a dragonrider. You know, how to properly greet people, give a good impression." Meledei paused in her writing and gently blew upon the words. "Basically how you act and deal with 'the public'."

"How not to act superior and smug all the time?" He asked, thinking of some of the dragonrider's he'd had encounters with while an apprentice. "I can tell people really absorb alot from that one."

"It depends on the person." Meledei knew some really nice dragonriders. Of course she was biased, but she knew that her father didn't act like that at all. She continued her writing as she talked. "We'll just have to be sure to not get too big for our britches."

F'gol watched her for another minute and finally sighed, the boredom too much for him. "I'm going to go see Tealth before lights out. Have fun with your chart."

"What, you're not going to keep me company?" Meledei slid a little whine into her voice, though she honestly didn't blame him. What she was doing wasn't the most entertaining of acts.

"Tomorrow." he offered, sure that she'd be plenty fine without him. "If you're done with your charts of course."

"I'll be done with this one." She had planned to finish the first one during one freetime, but the others she would take more time on. They still had much of the month to go and she didn't have to use _all_ of her free time every day. "Some friend you are - won't even keep me company while I do something that's going to benefit you."

F'gol rolled his eyes, "You'll survive I'm sure."

"I'm so unloved." Meledei sniffed audibly just as she began another line..

"Maybe you should see your dragon too." He suggested. He wasn't going to fall for the girl's tricks. "See you in the morning." He backed away and gave her a quick wave before ducking out of the room.

"Deserter!" Meledei called out after him before resuming her work. Elleth was asleep, choosing that over exploring or anything else, which was fine with Meledei. She wanted to at least get the first month's chart done since they were already into it. she could slow down for the others. She did wish F'gol had remained, though, for it would have been nice to have someone to talk to. The girl sighed and continued on her work. The sooner it was done, the sooner she could relax.
