J'darin

J'darin

With all the excitement of the flight overwith, things were at last beginning to settle down and get back to normal. And that meant drills, sweeprides and such like.

So when the message came to report to the Weyrleader, I'lan straightened himself up, and was soon knocking on the office door.

"Come!" J'darin called out from behind a stack of hides.

When it proved to be I'lan, he smiled and beckoned the young bronzerider to a chair. "Good morning, I'lan. I wanted to go over a few things with you, and ask your help."

"My help?" The young bronzerider looked puzzled as he took the seat.
What would the Weyrleader want with him? He was barely a turn out of weyrlinghood, and about the youngest in the wing J'darin nodded at him. "You and Naath fly very well together, and I thought you might want to spend some extra time studying formations.
We're perilously short of bronzeriders at the moment. I know you are young and not ready for anything resembling rank, but I want you to help the other riders if they ask. Bronze are naturally leaders, and you should practice that - its never too early."

Was this a way of saying he wasn't up to scratch? Extra study didn't sound like fun.

}:He means it. Hasaarth's thinks well of you,:{ came the comforting response to that thought. }:You should do it, we could be Weyrleaders someday,:{ stated Naath.

"Will this involve much extra time Sir ?"

"I suspect not, since the formations are probably quite fresh in your mind. I cannot make you Wingsecond, you're a bit young for that. But I want you thinking ahead to it. You and Naath will earn it. But we need leadership nonetheless, and you're my choice in my Wing."

"It won't be with the Weyrlingstaff will it?" The thought occurred to him of just how that would look, almost like he was being punsihed for not knowing formations.

"Not at all, I'lan. But we have some nervous riders, all working very hard to get over injuries and fears, and knowing we can't face another tragedy like the one we faced under O'dan. Encourage them, show them you are confident in your leaders.." He paused. "You are, aren't you?"

"Of course sir," he replied.

"Good show, I'lan. We have had a very unusual disaster at this Weyr, and we must act a little unusually to combat it. Just be the leader you naturally are, the wings need consistency and confidence more than anything else right now."

"Is there anything else you need from me sir?" asked the younger rider.

"Just your best, I'lan. I have noticed and look forward to watching you and Naath grow even further in your skills." The Weyrleader nodded once. He wanted all the young bronzeriders - and he had a few - to know their duties and strive to be leaders. This Weyr would not ever be harmed by someone like O'dan again, who didn't want to lead, or know what it meant to have hundreds of lives depending on your skills.

"Thank you Sir." I'lan got to his feet, "If you don't mind, Naath is calling me."

A little surprised at I'lan's hurry to leave him, J'darin nodded. "Aye, they always get our first duty." A faint smile followed, then. "You're dismissed." He bid the young man farewell, though his brow creased with worry again as soon as he left. He just couldn't inspire anyone to anything... With a faint sigh, he turned back to the stack of hides on his desk.
