Z'ku

Z'ku

Meledei was feeling a wee bit dizzy by the time the last dance came to an end. Her partner, a rather nice looking brownrider, bowed to her and graciously allowed another woman, greenrider by her knots, to dance him away back onto the floor. She took advantage of the brief respite to procure a drink, grape juice, sweet and tangy as it made its way down her throat. She stole over to a corner for a bit of solace and to catch her breath. The stream of partners seemed endless and she was glad for the lull - for the moment anyway. She'd get back into it soon enough.

"Good evening, goldrider." He wondered if using her title was the right choice. She seemed to be the more casual type.

"Hey Z'ku." Meledei paused in her drink to smile at her fellow weyrling. To be honest, she was surprised he had come up to her and talk to her. It wasn't that she wanted to avoid him, simply that they just hadn't done much socialising with one another, even as candidates. "It's okay to call me by my name, you know."

"Meledei." He smiled. He regretted not dancing with her at the Hatching, but if she'd been as overwhelmed as he had, she wouldn't have remembered him anyway. "Would you care to dance?"

"Yes." Meledei's smile brightened in response, but then she motioned with her glass. "As soon as I finish this. In the mean time, you can keep me company."

"Of course." He moved to get a glass of his own, returning a moment later. "Are you having a good time?"

"Yes, I am, though I've hardly stood still since arriving." Meledei sipped a bit at her juice, fingers tapping against the glass before asking, "What about you? Finding plenty of partners, I'm sure."

"Yes." And enjoying the perks that went along with his new status as a bronzerider. "Though not as many as you."

"Don't look at me, people keep flinging themselves at me." Meledei giggled. The attention was, she had to admit, making her a bit giddy, like a fine wine drunk too fast. "I'm not used to it, but I suppose it's pleasant enough."

"It must be stranger for you, to grow up here and have things so different now." He'd only been here a few sevendays before the Hatching.

"People are certainly taking notice." Meledei nodded. It was a good thing in some ways, but she had to also keep in mind that some people might not try to look past the colour of her dragon. "Surely you've had a similar experience?"

"It is very different. As a Candidate, you sort of fade into the background." Which had irked him on several occasions. "Now, everyone suddenly wants to know who I am."

"Yeah, that's about the way it is with me." Meledei admitted as she downed the last of her juice. "It makes me appreciate those who were my friends _before_ I impressed all the more."

He felt a twinge of guilt at that, and a touch of sadness as well. "My friends are back at Rising Moons. I guess I'll have to make new ones."

"Aww, I'm sorry." Meledei hadn't meant to bring up bad feelings. It seemed as if there was a hint of homesickness, something Meledei could understand. Well, maybe she could help him forget that for a while. The girl set down her now empty cup, then reached out to grab Z'ku's hand and tug him to the floor. "Come on, I owe you a dance!

He smiled and let her lead him. Maybe he didn't have to be so calculated about this. There was something to be said about going with the flow. "If I don't step on your toes, do you think I could have two?"

"I might be amenable to that." Meledei agreed with a laugh as she drew into position. "And I'll try not to step on _your_ toes!"

Z'ku put one hand on her waist. The song was upbeat, but not fast. "How considerate of you," he teased.

"I do try to be considerate of my partners." Meledei moved easily into the beat as Z'ku began to lead. "And one good turn does deserve another."

"One good _Turn_ deserves another," Z'ku pointed out the double meaning as he smiled.

Meledei laughed. "I'll dance to that!"
