Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 7 of Turn 5

Since it was nice day and a restday, Aileyan had taken his son to
outside to play. Herself, she took a some mending work with her, so
her hands got something to do while she watched Ravyan. The boy soon
found some other children to play with, since many families had the
same idea.

"Beautiful day, isn't it?" U'kaiah asked with a smile as he took a seat
next to the greenrider he knew from his wing.

"Yes, it is," Aileyan replied and neatly folded Ravyan's shirt she
just had finished mending. The boy went thru his clothes like a
Thread!

"Is that your little boy?" he asked, pointing to the toddler trying to
run after the other boys and girls.

"Yes, that's him, my Ravyan," Aileyan smiled fondly. "Is your son
around?"

"He's the one with the canine following him that your son seems so
fascinated with," the bronzerider said, pointing towards the
curly-haired boy.

"All beasts facinate Ravyan. He thinks my flit as his favourite toy,"
Aileyan said dryly, but she smiled.

"Then he must love your green."

"Oh, yes, his favourite climbing place," Aileyan's smile widened. "And
Kjarliheth doesn't mind a bit."

"They're pretty sturdy beasts luckily." U'kaiah watched as the canine
began jumping excitedly towards the little boy who seemed to eagar to
show him attention. "Kaiafel, watch Kal! That boy's too small for him
to play rough!" he called out to his son, pointing at the little toddler
who seemed to be happy now, but the bronzerider had to keep in mind that
the canine was barely more than a baby itself and hadn't learned his
limits quite yet.

Of course the canine knocked Ravyan down and he started to cry. "Well,
that was bound to happen," Aileyan remarked calmly, put her sewings
aside and went to pick up the crying child.
"Shh, sweetie, it's all right. Where did it hurt?"

Kaiafel felt guilty concern for the little boy as he wailed. "I'm
sorry. Kal didn't mean to do it!" he assured her.

"It wasn't your fault, it was accident," Aileyan replied the older
boy. "See, mommy is kissing the hurt away," she murmured for his son
and kissed the elbow he had scraped against ground.

"Dad, Kal didn't really hurt him, did he?" the boy whispered to his
father.

"No, son, he'll be just fine. But I think we need to keep Kal a little
more calm, all right?" U'kaiah gave Aileyan an apologetic smile. "Now
go on and play."

"You too," Aileyan said to Ravyan, who had stopped crying. She gave
him a little nudge and said: "Play nicely with the puppy."

"And you hold Kal and make sure he doesn't get too excited," the
bronzerider reminded him. "He's your responsibility."

"All right, Da. Come on." Kaiafel reached for Ravyan's hand, taking his
charge seriously.

"You can't take your eyes off them, can you," U'kaiah smiled, turning
back to the greenrider.

"No, you don't. I sometimes wish I could spent more time with him,"
she sighed. "He grows so fast and I feel I'm missing half of it."

"Well, I _did_ miss most of my son's life, I'm sad to say. At the time
it seemed there were things that were more important. Now I wish I
could go back and really watch him grow." U'kaiah had very few regrets
in his life, but not being there from the start of Kaiafel's life was
certainly one of them.

Aileyan nodded with expression of understanding on her face.

"So were you attatched to his father?" U'kaiah asked curiously.

"No, not really. His brown just happened to catch Kjarliheth. He was
kind enough and friendly and looked after me during the pregnancy, but
we weren't involved," Aileyan said. Not to mention that brownrider had
long since dropped out of her life altogether.

U'kaiah had been just like that brownrider. He had looked after Felka
during the pregnancy, and looked in on her after, but it was turns
before he could claim any sort of involvement in the boy's life. "You
must have really wanted him to stay such a big part of his life on top
of everything else."

Aileyan shrugged a bit. She really didn't care about herself but: " I
would had liked him to remain as part of Ravyan's life. Now he is just
a name in a record to Ravyan." Her voice told about her
disappointment.

"It's not as bad as it sounds. I never knew either of my parents and I
turned out all right I think. It doesn't matter who conceived you but
who raised you." U'kaiah had always been curious about his parents, and
had secret dreams when he was a child that they would one day come to
the Weyr and claim their son with pride... But after Impressing he
never felt any compulsion to find either one.

"I do hope so," Aileyan said and watched the boys playing together.
