N'vanik

N'vanik

"Ah, so you're the surprise Impression!"

F'gol's eyes went wide, he recognized the new Weyrleader even though he'd never met him before. At first he couldn't talk, he was being spoken to by a _very_ important man, but then he realized that he was of the same rank as Almonteo, and he could talk to him just fine. "Um, Yes, I guess that's me. I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to do it, really."

N'vanik chuckled. "Don't be sorry. You were right where that little blue needed you to be."

"You mean I'm not in trouble?" He thought for sure he would be. He wasn't Searched, and he hadn't asked permission to Stand.

"Trouble?!" Now N'vanik outright laughed. He took note of the knots on the boy's shoulder. "Maybe the Hall won't be too pleased to lose an apprentice, but they can't do anything about it. You don't belong to them anymore."

Now F'gol was more confused and he looked up to try and see any anger that he might be hiding on his face. "But I wasn't supposed to get Tealth. He wasn't for me."

"Apparently, Tealth thought otherwise. He almost left the Hatching Grounds to find you. That blue knew exactly what he wanted." Maybe it was just ego, but N'vanik liked the idea of a surprise Impression from Loseth's clutch.

So he wasn't in trouble... that was good. He gave a long sigh of relief, while he knew that Impression was permanent, he'd half talked himself into the idea that they'd try and take Tealth back from him. "Sir? What do I do now? I don't want to be a dragonrider."

N'vanik gave a surprised laugh. "Too bad! You Impressed a dragon, so now you're a dragonrider. There's no taking that back." Unless ... he closed that thought off, although it was always in the back of his mind when riders talked about being with their dragons forever. That wasn't always true.

"I know." F'gol sighed again, this time in despair. It wasn't how he'd envisioned his life, far from it. "It's just that when my friends at the Hall would talk about wanting to fight thread, I'd always tell them how crazy they were. And now here I am."

"Yeah, that's the price we pay. But it's worth it." At least the bluerider knew what was in his future. When N'vanik had Impressed, the return of Thread was still just speculation.

F'gol smiled slightly as he thought of his sleeping blue, "I love Tealth. I'm not saying that I'm not happy to have him, he's the best thing that ever happened to me." he knew he was whining though and it was a poor impression to make to the Weyrleader. "I just wish we weren't in a Pass."

"A lot of people do." When there was a death or a major scoring, he did, too. "But this is what dragons are meant for."

"But It's not what _I'm_ meant for." F'gol mumbled.

"It is now, whether you like it or not."

F'gol sighed, resigning himself to the fact. "I suppose so sir." His life had changed so much in just the last few hours. Part of him wished he'd never left bed this morning. The overwhelming part of him didn't really wish it though, Tealth had needed him, might have died without him. His needs seemed secondary to that of his little blue, even if it meant giving up his dreams.

"Don't worry too much about that now. You'll get plenty of training." N'vanik frowned, thinking. "I suppose you didn't have any Candidate classes ... you'll have some catching up to do." He was sure L'pin would know how to handle it.

"That's what everyone's been saying." F'gol replied thinking about everyone who'd come to talk to him since he'd Impressed. "Everyone seems really helpful though, and I'm a fast learner."

"Good. You'll do fine." He paused and then asked, "What _were_ you doing at the entrance anyway?"

F'gol looked down at the ground momentarily then looked back up to the Weyrleader. "I was just wanting to see my friends Impress. I was just going to stay for a minute and then go back to setting up the stage."

N'vanik smirked. The boy had gotten a lot more than a peek. "So, did they Impress?"

He shook his head, he'd have seen them at the barracks if they had. "No, neither one did. I just hope Jestyn's not mad at me. He might think I took his dragon."

"Tealth picked who he wanted." Although that might not console someone left standing.

"I wouldn't give him up, even if I could." If Jestyn couldn't understand, then he'd rather lose a friend then all the love Tealth gave him in just the few hours they'd been together.

"Any rider would say the same." N'vanik snapped his finger. "Oh, hey. I didn't catch your name."

"Figol." he replied immediately, then stammered, "I mean, F'gol, now I guess."

"Well, nice to meet you, F'gol. I look forward to working with you."

He couldn't say he looked forward to working with him back, the thought of having to fight thread was still slightly nauseating, still, he had to say something. "Well met Weyrleader, and thank you."
