Still smiling after leaving his daughter, N'vanik walked past some of the other new Weyrlings and stopped short when he saw the gold. Oh, yes. He should meet the Weyr's newest goldrider. "Congratulations," he told her.
"Thank you." Meledei tore her gaze away from her lifemate and smiled up at the Weyrleader. He hadn't been far behind the Weyrwoman, but it hadn't surprised her that either had come and spoken to her. "It is an honour." She had said the same thing to Traelyn, but the words were sincere.
"She's a lovely little queen." He smiled at the hatchling. "This is Loseth's first clutch, so this means a lot to us ..." He turned back to the girl. "Her name is Elleth, right?"
Elleth was lovely, lovlier than any other dragon in all of Pern. Meledei's smile shone all the brighter at N'vanik's praise and at the fact that he had remembered her lifemate's name. "Yes, Elleth is her name. It was a fine clutch." Of course it was, and she had impressed the finest of all the dragons.
"And what's the name of our newest goldrider?' he asked.
"Oh...oh Meledei. I'm Meledei." She hadn't even thought to introduce herself. Of course the Weyrleader wouldn't know her name, they had never met face to face before!
"Nice to meet you, Meledei. Have you been Standing long?" He wondered what she was like, what kind of rider she would be. Would she be like so many of the other goldriders he'd known, spoiled and superior?
"I've been standing when I was twelve, sir." Meledei responded politely. "And it is an honour and a pleasure to meet you as well, Weyrleader." He seemed nice. Meledei hadn't really met him before and didn't really know anything about him beyond what she had heard people talk about in the Weyr. Such things could be exaggerated or completely untrue, though, so she tried not to put too much weight on them.
"Thanks." He chuckled. "I bet you're thinking that all the time waiting was worth it."
"Yes." He knew exactly how she felt. Well, why wouldn't he? The Weyrleader had been in her very same place at one point as well. After all, he wasn't born with a dragon. "I agree, very worth it. I would have had it any other way." Meledei paused but a moment, then ask, "Did you have to wait as long?"
"No. I was only at the Weyr a few sevendays before I Impressed." N'vanik smiled, amused. "I didn't even have enough time to get into trouble."
That must have been nice. Still, like the Weyrleader had said, the wait was worth it. More than worth it. "You just got into trouble afterwards, right?" Meledei asked, her smile spreading into a grin.
"Plenty of it. And I still do, though I've been on good behavior lately."
"I'll do my best not to get into trouble." Meledei wasn't really a trouble maker in general. She knew she would make mistakes, though she hoped she would learn from them.
He nodded. "I suppose that's a good attitude to have."
"I want to make you and Weyrwoman Traelyn proud." She stated sincerely. Meledei would do her best and hoped she lived up to the title that she had gained with the impression of Elleth.
"Don't worry about that too much. You just worry about taking care of that gold beauty." Loseth's daughter ... The bronze's pride had been filling him all day, and it went up a notch when Loseth picked up on that thought.
}:Nyith and I have many fine hatchlings. And Elleth will have hers, in time.:{
"Don't worry, sir," Meledei assured him, her eyes bright at the compliment to her lifemate. "I will take the _best_ care of Elleth."
"Good. Enjoy the celebration, and try not to stay up too late," he said. She would probably have an endless parade of people congratulating her.
"Yes sir." N'vanik was right. She had been swamped when she first arrived and things had eased off. As N'vanik left, however, more people came and it wasn't long before Meledei was swallowed up in crowds of well wishes once again.
