Meledei thought it might work. At least, she hoped it worked. The girl really was so...so pessimistic. Maybe this would help her to cheer up a bit more. She certainly seemed to need a bit of cheering.
One chores were done, the long time candidate made her way to the barracks. For someone who wasn't staying there, she certainly found her way there quite a bit. Really, it wasn't that surprising. Most of the candidates resided there, especially those who didn't normally live or craft at the weyr.
"Cosani?" The girl called out softly as she entered the barracks, eyes flickering about.
She stood up to see who was calling her. "Yes?"
The beastcrafter bounded over to the girl, a grin spread wide across her face. "There you are! How are you?"
Cosani shrugged. "I'm okay." What was she so happy about?
"I have something for you." Meledei plopped down upon a chair before reaching into the pouch that swung at her hip. She took from it a small wrapped bundle and held it out for the other candidate to take.
Cosani gave Mel a curious look, then sat on her bed and unwrapped the package. Inside was a small carved dragon. "You bought this for me?"
"Actually, no." Meledei shifted slightly, as if uncomfortable with her admittance. "I made it."
"You _made_ it?" She studied it more closely. "You made it for me?" It certainly wasn't crafter material, but Cosani couldn't have made anything half as good.
"My father crafted before Thread fell." Meledei explained, "He taught me. I'm not as good as he is though."
It had been a long time since anyone but her mother had given her something. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." The girl beamed. It seemed her gift was well received - at least, about as well received as Meledei was going to get when it came to Cosani. "Would you like to sit with me at dinner? I'm meeting some of the other candidates."
Cosani thought about it for a moment. "Okay."
"We'll all be eating around the eighteenth candlemark." Meledei was rather surprised, really. Cosani wasn't really known for being sociable, but Meledei was glad that the other girl was willing. "I can meet you at the entrance to the dining hall."
"Okay." Cosani nodded. She sometimes ended up having to eat with someone anyway, when the dining hall was full. Better to sit next to someone that wasn't annoying.
"Good!" Maybe this would mean the girl would start getting out more, start making friends. It wasn't good for Cosani to be alone so much. Meledei stood, "I'll see you then!"
"Yeah." Cosani turned and set the figure on the table next to her bed.
